Perverted Care in the State of Exception
But I am your mother!? Queer-feminist resistance to censorship in fascist times
This article is a feminist-queer discussion of contemporary forms of censorship and resistance to those abuses. Drawing on recent examples from Poland, the emphasis is given to systemic, neoliberal forms of censoring, which make the ‘caring hands of the fascist Leviathan’ even more ready to restrict freedom
Towards a Weak Avant-Garde, Re-Shaping the Canon
Feminist discussions in art history usually focus on the exclusion of women artists and the reification of women’s bodies. A growing constellation of queer and feminist theorists today, however, analyse failure and cuteness as aspects of contemporary feminist avant-garde practices, suggesting that alternative currents in art practice and theory are emerging that challenge traditional notions and modes of art production. In my article, I discuss t…
Serfdom as the Matrix of Contemporary Poland, Critically Revisited
The Slave, Antigone and the Housewife
This article moves across the wide spectrum of feminist interpretations of Hegel, starting with Carla Lonzi and revisiting the queer analysis of Judith Butler, in order to re-interpret the famous figure of “Unhappy Consciousness.” From a feminist perspective, these passages in Phenomenology of Spirit should be read as a re-evaluation of the care and reproductive labour, which the Subject experiences as miserably repetitive and mundane, at the sta…
The Return of Hegel
Introduction to the issue “The Return of Hegel: Dialectics and the Weak”
Nursing and Reading. Affective Realism in Andrzej Wróblewski’s Painting
Andrzej Wróblewski’s painting has already achieved the status of a cult classic. His worksare usually interpreted as a confrontation with war, the system, or totalitarianism—thatis, as “political.” Understanding politics in this way—separating its “public,” “general,” or institutional aspects from direct, lived experience—is at odds with dialectics, whose complex trajectory the young Warsaw-based painters attempted to follow shortly after the war…
Precarity and Gender
This article examines the concept of precarity from a feminist perspective, focused on love and affective labour, critically addressing the gender inequalities of neoliberal capitalism. The romantic, heterosexual model of love, typical for modern Western societies, has been dismantled and criticized in various ways, leading to contradictory solutions, which include its annihilation, sublation and modification, as well as (rather conservative) eff…
Complaint as counterpublic
Th is article critically engages in the perplexed ontology of the complaint, which crosses the boundaries between the personal and the public and at the same time undermines the presuppositions organizing said division within the academic workplace. A feminist counterpublic – as Nancy Fraser defi nes it – opens ways of opposing the existing inequalities by producing a discursive space of critique of the status quo from an oppressed or marginalize…
Słaby Opór. Obraz, Wspólnota I Utopia Poza Paradygmatem Heroicznym
Niniejszy artykuł stanowi wprowadzenie do numeru Praktyki Teoretycznej poświęconego problematyce słabego oporu. Oprócz głównych inspiracji teoretycznych zjawiska, które można by pokrótce nazwać zwrotem w stronę codzienności czy też odwrotem od heroicznego modelu podmiotowości, redaktorka omawia też opublikowane w numerze artykuły
A Bitter Victory
The article begins with the observation that, as regards an anti-fascist sentiment in Poland today, the left appears mainly to have won one battle – in the terrain of culture – whereas ultra-conservative forces dominate public and political life. The analysis proceeds to consider the shift towards a leftist practice in terms of resistance to the widespread precarity of art workers, found to be closely connected with fighting growing fascist tende…
Weak Resistance in Semi-Peripheries
The Utopia of “Solidarity” Between Public Sphere and Counterpublics
This article argues that we need to see the utopian dimension of the early days of the “Solidarność” independent workers' union, created in August 1980 in Gdańsk, Poland, not as a nostalgically recalled event of the distant past, exceptional and therefore petrified as a remnant of past generations, but as a lively political inspiration for our theory and practice for the future. In order to discuss Solidarność as utopia, the article revisits the …
Prekariat i dziewczyna. Fetyszyzm towarowy i emancypacja dziś
This article discusses the widely praised notion of precariat. While demonstrating the weaknesses of its theoretical assessments offered by such authors, as: Kathi Weeks, Guy Standing, Jan Sowa or Antonio Negri, I try to reinstall diversity that lays at the core of this category. It is, as I argue, crucial for making emancipation possible, to make the “girl” function as something more than a simple neoliberal icon of conformist consumption
Potwory.Próba feministycznej lektury Rzeczy-pospolitej Hardta i Negriego
I propose a discussion of some feminist observations concerning the book Commonwealth by Negri and Hardt. I focus on the issues of biopolitical labor and the topics developed in feminist analysis of reproductive and care labor, I also suggest, that there are problems regarding the body and sexuality, that need to be solved. In my discussion of the book I also rise some problems concerning the conditions of occupying the position of the excluded, …
La Mestiza from Ukraine? Border Crossing with Gloria Anzaldúa
In this essay, I try to rethink Gloria Anzaldúa’s concept of the borderlands in the context of contemporary Poland and its borders; that is, I rethink these particular borderlands with her. This operation is embedded in the process of translation and in the analysis of the politics of translation. I refer to Walter Benjamin to show how Anzaldúa’s work can be seen as crossing the foreignness of language. I emphasize her claim that the multiplicity…
