A Social Desirability Item Response Theory Model
In this study, a new item response theory model is developed to account for situations in which respondents overreport or underreport their actual opinions on a positive or negative issue. Such behavior is supposed to be a result of deception and transfer mechanisms. In the proposed model, this behavior is simulated by incorporating a deception term into a multidimensional rating scale model, followed by multiplication by a transfer term, with th…

Prediction of Graduate Major From Cognitive and Self-Report Test Scores Obtained During the High School Years
Using information from Project TALENT's 11-yr. follow-up (Wise, et al., 1979), 8 graduate major groups were formed for males, 6 for females. Three of the female groups were supplemented by undergraduate majors to increase sample size. Descriptive canonical discriminant analyses were conducted in each sex, high school grade, and separate sets of cognitive and self-report predictors that were administered in high school. Finally, analyses of the co…
Underachievement among Spatially Gifted Students
High school students gifted in spatial ability were selected from a large national probability sample and compared to those gifted in mathematical ability. The groups were compared on multiple measures, including a range of cognitive tests, organizational participation, hobbies, extracurricular reading, coursework, study habits, grades, occupational and academic intentions, guidance received, and family/home environment. Results indicate that, re…
