Measures of Self-Reported Well-Being
Components of perceived life quality
How do people arrive at assessments of their own life quality? This investigation begins from the hypothesis that social indicators of perceived well-being will, like other attitudes, reflect tow basic types of influence: affect and cognition. In addition, the indicators were expected to include two other components: unique variance (mainly random measurement error) and correlated measurement error. The extent to which each of these variance comp…

Measures of self-reported well-being
Attitude Measurement
A coefficient is described which can be used to obtain rapid reliability estimates for scales derived from either factor or cluster analysis. Some affinities with Likert and Guttman scaling are noted. But the total approach is superior to either of these techniques, and to factor or cluster analysis used alone, insofar as it enables the researcher not only to explore the dimensionality of an attitude domain, but also to decide, at the same time, …

Self Images and Smoking Behaviour Among School Boys
Four semantic differential questionnaires were employed to investigate the ways in which boys aged 11-15 perceive smoking. Each questionnaire consisted of 19 bi-polar scales against which the boys had to rate the following four concepts: 'the boy smoker'; 'the boy non-smoker'; 'the self'; and 'the ideal self.' 5,601 boys completed the four questionnaires.Factor analysis of the intercorrelations between the scales showed that the boys were rating …
Correlational Analysis of Social Survey Data
Visual Size and Familiar Size
Recent experiments show that, in the absence of distance cues, accurate estimates of the size of familiar objects can be achieved on the basis of memory alone. It is by no means certain, however, that memory is operative in size estimates of familiar objects seen in ordinary perceptual situations, since distance cues normally present are themselves sufficient to mediate the perception of the real sizes of things. In investigating this problem use…
