While positive affect and life evaluation are positively correlated in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), their relationship is much weaker than in Western countries, suggesting a misalignment between how people feel and how they judge their lives, a pattern we refer to as the African well-being paradox. Using Gallup World Poll microdata (2013–2024) covering 39 SSA and 27 Western countries, we construct an individual-level measure of this misalignment: th…
Development and Validation of a Real-Time Happiness Index Using Google TrendsTM
It is well-established that a positive relationship exists between happiness and the economic outcomes of a country. Traditionally, surveys have been the main method for measuring happiness, but they face challenges such as “survey fatigue”, high costs, time delays, and the fluctuating nature of happiness. Addressing these challenges of survey data, Big Data from sources like Google TrendsTM and social media is now being used to complement survey…
The impact of antiretroviral treatment and child-focused unconditional cash transfers on child mortality
Although there is sufficient evidence in the epidemiological literature that antiretroviral treatment (ART) reduces child mortality, there is limited evidence of its effect in the socio-economic determinants of child mortality literature. Furthermore, evidence on the effect of child focused unconditional cash transfers (UCTs) on child mortality is limited, especially in the African context. Using South Africa's provincial level data over the peri…
Trust predicts compliance with Covid-19 containment policies
We use Twitter, Google mobility, and Oxford policy data to study the relationship between trust and compliance over the period March 2020 to January 2021 in ten, mostly European, countries. Trust has been shown to be an important correlate of compliance with COVID-19 containment policies. However, the previous findings depend upon two assumptions: first, that compliance is time invariant, and second, that compliance can be measured using self rep…
Social well-being inequality in Africa
In this paper, we construct a composite social well-being index to investigate disparities between 30 African countries. We do this because previous inequality studies relied on income measures; however, when it comes to Africa, specifically, income is not an adequate measure to capture well-being. Furthermore, we apply the recentered influence function (RIF) method to regress the variance of social well-being on likely influencing factors. Lastl…
