Optimal cultivated land operation scale for sustainable agriculture: A global multi-objective optimization framework balancing yield, income and emission
Judicial big data reveals systemic risks in China’s transfer of development rights
‘Fit-for-purpose’ spatial justice: Diffusion of European land consolidation and global reflection
This study reconstructs the programmatic core of land consolidation as a technology–governance composite grounded in spatial justice, organized through a three-stage sequence of entry diagnostics, process assembly, and institutional safeguards. Within this framework we identify four institutional pillars that render works, rights, and ecology commensurable: transparent valuation and equivalence, registration of rights with write-through, public d…

The interlinkages between land consolidation and land governance – a comparative study of China and Germany
Land consolidation rearranges landscapes, land rights, and land use. How land governance strategies influence practical choices in land consolidation projects is unknown, nor is it known how land consolidation practices influence land governance strategies. This study aims to identify which interlinkages exist between land governance and land consolidation choices for two institutional environments, China and Germany. The analysis uses systematic…
Interpretable machine learning unveils greater environmental burden of vertical urban growth over horizontal sprawl in China
Shaping Future Urbanization: A Systematic Review of Predictive and Preventive LUC Indicators for Sustainable New City Development
New city developments (NCDs) have significantly increased around the globe, especially in developing countries, to accommodate population growth and foster economic development. However, the uncertain footprint of NCDs often introduces trade-offs between urban expansion and sustainability, underscoring the need for integrated land use change (LUC) management. This study adopts a system-level perspective on LUC modeling to identify indicators and …
Managing ‘great expectations’: What can land administration realistically achieve
Managing 'great expectations': What can land administration realistically achieve?Land administration theory and practice have recently witnessed a turn recognizing and emphasizing the importance of social justice outcomes. While welcome, the practicability of these aspirations is in doubt, not least because of the diversity and complexity of perspectives concerning landrelated problems. We show how a boundary-work approach that does not require co…
Urban Sprawl Symptoms in Bandar Lampung Suburban Area, Indonesia
This research investigates the phenomenon of urban sprawl in a medium-sized metropolitan area, specifically Bandar Lampung. It identifies the primary characteristics of urban sprawl and its impact on suburban development. The goal is to pinpoint the symptoms of urban sprawl through its spatial patterns, which may form systemically or sporadically, and predict their occurrence. The underlying theory is that urban sprawl symptoms can be observed in…
Exploring land use dynamics in rural areas. An analysis of eight cases in the Global North
The effectiveness of voluntary collective action in China's rural land development
China is gradually and directly making rural collective land available on the land market. It is important to understand how stakeholders collectively treat and manage this land, and if this collective action leads to effective and sustainable results. This paper, however, revises Ostrom's framework of collective action by constructing the joint analysis of social capital, trust, and cooperation performance, in order to better capture the distinc…
Rural Development Policy in Germany Regarding Coworking Spaces and Effects on Vitality and Versatility of Rural Towns
Remote rural areas have been declining in population for decades, partly permanently as people move away and partly temporarily, owing to commuting. This increasing paucity of inhabitants is causing these places to lose vitality and versatility; this, in turn, renders them less attractive overall. In terms of spatial development, policies devised for rural areas have long been concerned not only with agriculture, but also with holistic developmen…

Housing Finance Strategies for Low-Income Households in Secondary Cities: Contextualization Under Customary Tenure in Ghana
High mortgage repayment-to-income ratios and unavailability of adequate and secured collateral are major setbacks for low-income households in accessing housing finance. This notwithstanding, few studies have examined housing finance strategies that are available to low-income households within a secondary city context amidst the complexities of customary land tenure. This study examined the housing finance strategies adopted by low-income househ…
Machine Learning Algorithms for Urban Land Use Planning: A Review
Urbanization is persistent globally and has increasingly significant spatial and environmental consequences. It is especially challenging in developing countries due to the increasing pressure on the limited resources, and damage to the bio-physical environment. Traditional analytical methods of studying the urban land use dynamics associated with urbanization are static and tend to rely on top-down approaches, such as linear and mathematical mod…
An Evaluation of Massive Land Interventions for the Relocation of Capital Cities
Across the world, capital cities are being relocated. Such practices have existed almost as long as capitals themselves. Against the background of the relocation of Indonesia’s seat of government from Jakarta to East Kalimantan, it is clear that such processes will continue to take place in the future. Especially if one considers the reasons for the move: climate change is leading to an increasing inhabitability of the Indonesian capital. Therefo…

The Contradictory Effects in Efficiency and Citizens’ Participation when Employing Geo-ICT Apps within Local Government
With the increasing use of web-based mapping applications, inter-mediation between public planning agencies and citizens is changing. This article investigates how one form of inter-mediation, geo-ICT-enabled apps (applications on mobile phones and/or internet that use maps or locations as basic references for any functional analysis), influences the degree of efficiency and participation in managing public space. The theoretical assumption here …

Why Tenure Responsive Land-Use Planning Matters: Insights for Land Use Consolidation for Food Security in Rwanda
Land use consolidation aims to address food insecurity challenges in Rwanda. However, there is contradictory evidence on whether this tool has met food security objectives or not. This study addresses two questions: How has the land use consolidation improved (or not improved) food security at the local level? How can food security challenges be addressed using a renewed approach to land use consolidation that adopts a tenure responsive land use …

Identifying Human Recognition Deprived Women: Evidence from Malawi and Peru
Using data from the Demographic and Health Surveys from Malawi and Peru, we identify human recognition deprived women and analyse social-demographic and socioeconomic factors influencing human recognition deprivation. We find educated spouses/partners are less likely to provide negative human recognition to women. We also observe women’s education has a small non-monotonic impact on the likelihood of human recognition deprivation. Women are also …
