  • The costs of geopolitical risk and the impact of the EU cohesion policy

Open Access•Paolo Di, Roberta Arbolino et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Public and Cooperative…•2025•References: 10

Global political and economic tensions can produce relevant consequences across Europe. This paper provides novel evidence on the costs of geopolitical risk (GPR) in the European Union countries, that of a reduced effectiveness of regional policies. Using cohesion policy data for the period 2007–2020 and adopting a panel‐time series heterogeneous coefficient model, we show that the impact of European Union cohesion funds on economic growth is red…

  • Stay or leave Ethiopia

    T L Lantz, Roberta Arbolino et al.•ARTICLE•Development Southern Africa•2023

This study analyses the main determinants of migration in order to guide future policy interventions in Ethiopia. We use a double-hurdle model for observing a sample of 4,946 households by a representative survey data. The findings show that the likelihood of migration mainly depends on socio-economic factors while not affected by regional origin. The determinants related to household heads and members have strong impacts, thus confirming that th…

  • Organized crime and corruption

    Roberta Arbolino, Raffaele Boffardi•ARTICLE•Regional Studies•2023•References: 5

The paper evaluates the effect of illegal activities on Cohesion Policy implementation. This issue is fundamental in Italy, where large delays in expenditure risk to undermine the growth-enhancing effects of funds. To explain delays, we focus on two criminal behaviours: corruption and organized crime. By exploiting a two-step approach, an empirical analysis is carried out on Italian provinces, with a focus on Southern ones, between 2007 and 2015.…

  • Assessing the impact of special economic zones on regional growth through a comparison among EU countries

    Roberta Arbolino, Tiffany L Lantz et al.•ARTICLE•Regional Studies•2022•Cited by: 4•References: 1

The establishment of incentive zones represents a cluster policy approach that a country can implement to boost economic growth. Being influenced by regional characteristics, the success of specific incentive types (special economic zones, free-trade zones, free zones) may vary considerably. By using a new composite indicator, differently designed according to each type of development plan, this study analyses 51 European incentive zones so as to…

  • The evaluation of sustainable tourism policymaking

Roberta Arbolino, Raffaele Boffardi et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Sustainable Tourism•2021

Tourism-related activities are deemed to have a negative impact on the natural environment, thus requiring a proper management scheme. The implementation of planning procedures for sustainable tourism activities needs to be based on the active involvement of several actors, with conflicting goals and interests. In addition, the need for resource rationalisation is more and more pressing. Thus, this research aims to propose a procedure for selecti…

Open Access•Roberta Arbolino, Paolo Di Caro et al.•ARTICLE•JCMS Journal of Common Market…•2020•Cited by: 9•References: 63

European and national policy‐makers have highlighted the role of the cohesion policy in smoothing the effects of the crisis during the programme period 2007–13. To support these claims, however, specific evidence is needed. This article studied the relations between the absorption of the EU funds and regional labour markets in Italian regions during the Great Recession. By applying different panel data models to new data on cohesion policy, three…
