Do the living arrangements of older people matter for the family transfers they receive? Evidence from Senegal
In the absence of broad-based formal health insurance and social protection systems in much of sub-Saharan Africa, the family acts as the key provider of support to older people. This paper furthers our understanding of family support mechanisms in the context of low-income countries by focusing on support from outside the household, which has been less studied so far. By using the data of 3,114 people aged ≥50 from the second round of the Senega…
Population Aging and Work Life Duration in Canada
Le vieillissement de la population suscite des préoccupations quant au fait que les années de vie supplémentaires sont principalement consacrées à la retraite, ce qui augmenterait la pénurie de main-d’œuvre et la pression sur les finances publiques. Cooperative management of pest susceptibility to transgenic Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) crops is pursued worldwide in a variety of forms and to varying degrees of success depending on context. We examine this context using a comparative socioecological analysis of resistance management in Australia, Brazil, India, and the United States. We find that a shared understanding of resistance risks among government regulators, growers, and other actors …

Understanding Employment Participation of Older Workers
Canada is expecting rapid population aging over the coming decades, a fact that has led many observers to question the sustainability of its pension systems. The effects of population aging, however, could be mitigated by an extension of the working life. This article presents the results of a critical review of Canadian knowledge about the determinants of retirement age and labour-market participation of older workers. The determinants are group…
Developing New Strategies to Support Future Caregivers of Older Canadians with Disabilities
This paper projects annual growth rates between 2001 and 2031 in the need for informal and formal support among elderly Canadians with disabilities. The paper also discusses the policy implications of the increasing demand for informal caregivers. Using Statistics Canada's LifePaths microsimulation model, these projections incorporate disability rates and the potential availability of family caregivers. The authors conclude that continued focus o…

Factors Underlying the Institutionalization of Elderly Persons in Canada
Using data from the Survey of Old Age Security and Canadian Pension Plan Retirement Recipients conducted by Health and Welfare Canada in 1987, this article estimates the relationship between sociodemographic characteristics and institutionalization of elderly persons in Canada. Region of residence was introduced in our model as a proxy for system effects. Logistic regression showed that age, marital status, health, family income, and region of re…
