The drivers and the barriers of incoming remittance flows in Europe
The paper compiles a Poisson Pseudo-Maximum Likelihood econometric model aiming at detecting and assessing the drivers and the barriers of incoming remittance flows in Europe. The analysis focuses on 297 NUTS 2 level regions and covers the period 2010–2018. For the needs of the analysis, the paper compiles a dataset with interregional remittance flows “regionalising” the corresponding country-level data. The findings of the paper offer substantia…
Unveiling geographical patterns of hierarchy in the Greek labor market network
This article develops a comprehensive framework for understanding labor markets’ spatial configuration and development dynamics, across multiple spatial scales. It applies to the Greek Labor Market Network and delineates five geographical zones of topological similarity, proposing a “status-polus” model capturing the coexistence between spatial development patterns, structural units, administrative scale, intermodality, and their underlying econo…
Regional economic impact of the Next Generation European Union recovery plan
This paper analyzes the economic impact of the Next Generation Funds package of the European Union (NGEU), focusing on the allocation of NGEU funds across European regions and the impact on rent distribution using new datasets on direct investments and remittances. The distributional characteristics of Interreg Transnational Programmes and their role in promoting regional cohesion
Interreg is an instrument of Cohesion Policy promoting cooperation among different organizations of Europe to tackle common challenges. Project funding within Interreg could become competitive, given the strong interest from numerous institutions in participating. This, in turn, may lead to disparities in the number of projects implemented across European regions. If participation is driven by factors such as the economic development level of reg…
Regional Investment Flows from Greece to Bulgaria in the Covid‐19 context
This paper offers a comprehensive analysis of the investment flows from Greek to Bulgarian regions against the context of COVID‐19. Employing a mixed research method, it investigates the initial impact of COVID‐19 on regional FDI flows from Greece to Bulgaria and intends to explore to which extent the pandemic acts as an impediment to firm relocation, by examining regional investment flows from 2013 to 2020. The effects of the COVID‐19 macroecono…
Business tourism spending in Eurozone countries
The paper detects for convergence trends in terms of per capita business tourism spending among the Eurozone countries. The paper employs the methodological approach of gaps’ convergence clubs, and covers the period 2001-2018. The findings point to clear trends of convergence, indicating that business tourism seems to alleviate spatial externalities in the Eurozone economic space. This calls for a set of well-targeted and carefully-designed polic…
Convergence and public debt in the European Union
The paper brings together two distinct strands of literature that discuss the process of convergence in the EU and the impact of public debt on growth. It makes a contribution to both literatures, by challenging the standard approach that relates public debt to growth, on two grounds. First, it shows that the process of convergence that took place among EU countries prior to the crisis was driven primarily by public policies that, however, increa…
Trade Activity Between the EU and Its Neighbouring Countries
The objective of the paper is to examine whether trade activity intensifies over time as the outcome of signed bilateral trade agreements. Focusing on (the trade component of) the European Neighbourhood Policy, the paper conducts a study of trade activity between the EU and its neighbouring countries, attempting to offer a detailed analysis in terms of trade patterns and to investigate whether proximity is combined with higher trade flows, within…
The regional impact of European Union association agreements
The regional impact of European Union association agreements: an event-analysis approach to the case of Central and Eastern Europe. Regional Studies. Although European Union association agreements are generally seen as welfare improving, relatively little is known about their spatial–distributional consequences. Drawing on the pre-accession experience of Central and Eastern Europe (CEE), this paper estimates the regional growth effects of such ag…

Regional convergence and growth in Europe
The paper examines the pattern of regional convergence and the determinants of regional growth in Europe, providing a discussion of the issues that are of relevance to the theoretical conceptions and the subsequent design of regional development policy, supported by an illustrative empirical analysis. The analysis covers 249 NUTS II regions of the European Union in the period 1990–2003. Using as its basis the standard framework of (absolute) β-co…
Spatial variations of Greek manufacturing employment growth
A border regions typology in the enlarged European Union
The processes of European Union (EU) integration and enlargement have produced a new regional socioeconomic map in Europe. Border regions, in particular, have been put in a state of flux. The re‐allocation of activities, opportunities and threats is changing their socioeconomic role and significance. Thus, border regions have become an issue of great importance during the last fifteen years in both the areas of scientific research and policy maki…
