  • Is the Bangladesh Paradox Sustainable?

Open Access•Jean-Philippe Platteau, Rafiqua Ferdousi et al.•BOOK•Is the Bangladesh Paradox…•2024

Bangladesh is widely seen as a 'paradox'. Over the last quarter of a century, it has maintained economic growth and has outperformed many countries on social indicators while scoring very low on the quality of governance. Moreover, its economic progress does not seem to indicate significant improvement in comparative institutional indicators. While utilizing the latest round of a household survey of Bangladesh, this paper used a vulnerability index to understand household welfare in case of shocks, uncertainty, or unforeseen events like COVID-19. Our results suggest that in the long run, a 10 per cent depreciation of the real exchange rate is associated with, on av…

  • Fostering Systems Thinking for Youth Leading Environmental Change

Open Access•Radha Sayal, Sayema Haque Bidisha et al.•ARTICLE•Ecopsychology•2016

More youth-based environmental engagement programs (EEPs) are needed to help combat the impact of climate change. Current programs just focus their content on individual-level personal practices (e.g., recycling); are designed to be implemented in one setting with little regard for broader implications or opportunities for contextual adaption; and collect little evaluative information about how programs are developed, implemented, and evaluated. …

  • The Youth Leading Environmental Change Project

Open Access•Manuel Riemer, Courte Voorhees et al.•ARTICLE•Ecopsychology•2016

Significant cultural transformations of the kinds that are needed to move our global society toward sustainability require youth to engage in environmental actions. These actions are more than just updating one's personal practice (e.g., recycling). They are “intentional and conscious civic behaviors that are focused on systemic causes of environmental problems and the promotion of environmental sustainability through collective efforts” (Alisat …
