  • Stories from two generations of gay men living in the midst of HIV-Aids

Peter Robinson, Paula Geldens et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Australian Studies•2014•Cited by: 1

In Australia and other Western countries, gay men and intravenous drug users were particularly vulnerable to moral judgement and stigma in the early years of the HIV-AIDS epidemic. For most of the final decades of the twentieth century, HIV-AIDS policy and debate in Australia focussed on the initial cohort of gay men who were affected-that is, those born in the late 1940s and 1950s. Since the early 2000s, however, increased rates of HIV infection…

This paper considers Ulrich Beck's ‘risk society’ theses as a framework for exploring the experiences of 85 young residents of a regional Australian …

  • For More than Just the Postcard’

Peta Freestone, Paula Geldens et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Leisure Research•2008•Cited by: 5•References: 4

This paper aims to locate student exchange as a mode of tourism within a sociological framework. Data was collected through in‐depth interviews with seven Australian undergraduate students who participated in an exchange program in 2005 or 2006. The results suggest that the exchange experience goes beyond tourism in the consumerist tradition of Urry's (2002a) influential The Tourist Gaze. Instead, participants identified their experience as a mor…

  • Perceptions of Reconciliation and related Indigenous Issues among Young Residents of Shepparton

    Open Access•Lisa Bourke, Paula M Geldens•ARTICLE•Australian Journal of Social Issues•2007•Cited by: 2•References: 16

It has been argued that reconciliation between Indigenous and non‐Indigenous Australians requires non‐Indigenous Australians to change their attitudes. Some suggest that this process is occurring and that younger people hold more positive attitudes towards Indigenous Australians. This paper explored the perspectives of 86 young people from Shepparton, Victoria in relation to reconciliation and related Indigenous issues. The study found that young…
