  • Territorial governance of just transition? – A case study of Just Transition Fund (JTF) process in Finland

    Open Access•Mikko Weckroth, Michael Kull et al.•ARTICLE•Regional Studies•2025•References: 6

This study examines Finland’s planning of the EU’s Just Transition Fund (JTF), focusing on phasing out energy peat and its socioeconomic impacts. Despite Finland’s high governance capacity, significant challenges emerged in achieving distributive, procedural and recognitive justice. Through stakeholder interviews and policy analysis, the research highlights gaps in multilevel coordination, stakeholder inclusion and addressing socio-cultural dimen…

    Open Access•Mikko Weckroth, Teemu Kemppainen•ARTICLE•Regional Studies•2023•Cited by: 7•References: 18

This analysis makes an empirical enquiry into urban–rural and regional value differences in Europe. In this task we use the 7th Round of the European Social Survey (ESS) and Eurostat’s NUTS-level data and focus on four value orientations derived from the Human Values Scale: Self-enhancement, Self-transcendence, Openness to change and Conservation. Results show that the most distinct urban–rural differences lie in the Conservation versus Openness …

  • Socioeconomic geography of climate change views in Europe

    Open Access•Mikko Weckroth, Sanna Ala-Mantila•ARTICLE•Global Environmental Change•2021•Cited by: 14•References: 16

Climate change views have their socioeconomic foundations but also specific geographies. In merging these perspectives, this analysis uses ESS Round 8 data from 23 European countries to examine whether climate change scepticism and concern, pro-environmental personal norm and a willingness to engage in energy-saving behaviour exhibit, first, urban–rural and/or regional differences, and second, if these attitudes can be explained at individual lev…

  • Urbanisation and the shifting conditions of the state as a territorial‐political community: A study of the geographies of political efficacy

Open Access•Juho Luukkonen, Mikko Weckroth et al.•ARTICLE•Transactions of the Institute of…•2021•Cited by: 2•References: 61

In this paper, we contribute to recent debates on the geographies of discontent by examining the implications of urbanisation on the state as a territorial‐political community in the European context. Building on an Arendtian conception of politics, we argue that the emergence of the “urban” as a dominant spatio‐political imaginary has led to a narrowing of the conditions of politics and political agency within states. The urban imaginary has pro…

  • (Un)Happiness, where are you? Evaluating the relationship between urbanity, life satisfaction and economic development in a regional context

    Open Access•Mikko Weckroth, Teemu Kemppainen•ARTICLE•Regional Studies Regional Science•2021•Cited by: 5•References: 14

Prior literature suggests that, among the so-called 'developed economies', residing in urban contexts is associated with lower life satisfaction. Using data from the European Social Survey (ESS) and Eurostat, we contribute to this literature by focusing on three different indicators of urbanity (subjective domicile, population density and living in a dominant urban region) in a multilevel modelling context in order to define where exactly the rel…

  • Territorial Cohesion of What and Why? The Challenge of Spatial Justice for EU’s Cohesion Policy

    Open Access•Mikko Weckroth, Sami Moisio•ARTICLE•Social Inclusion•2020•Cited by: 2•References: 13

Over the past two decades, both academics and policy makers have discussed the meaning of territorial cohesion in the context of the European Union (EU). This debate on the meaning and content of territorial cohesion is becoming increasingly important in a Europe that is facing multiple crises. This article contributes to the literature on EU’s territorial cohesion policies by tracing the ways in which territorial cohesion has been defined, frame…

  • Socio-economic stratification of life satisfaction in Ireland during an economic recession: A repeated cross-sectional study using the European Social Survey

Open Access•Mikko Weckroth, Teemu Kemppainen et al.•ARTICLE•Irish Journal of Sociology•2017

Life satisfaction is an understudied topic in literature on socio-economic stratification. Using the European Social Survey data, this study concentrates on the recent economic recession in Ireland, and the socio-economic stratification of life satisfaction before and during economic crisis. We measure stratification multidimensionally using education, occupational social class and income. The results show that the effects of the crisis, which pe…

  • Human values, subjective well-being and the metropolitan region

    Philip S Morrison, Mikko Weckroth•ARTICLE•Regional Studies•2017•Cited by: 26•References: 12

Human values, subjective well-being and the metropolitan region. Regional Studies. Living in a country’s largest metropolitan centre has a negative effect on subjective well-being. Although documented in many developed economies, the reasons for this particular geography of well-being are still poorly understood. Meanwhile a separate body of research has shown that the holding of extrinsic or personally focused values is also associated with lowe…

  • Human capital, cultural values and economic performance in European regions

    Open Access•Mikko Weckroth, Teemu Kemppainen•ARTICLE•Regional Studies Regional Science•2016•Cited by: 6•References: 4

This study examines the cross-sectional association of three value orientations (self-direction, achievement and power) and level of gross domestic product (GDP) in 289 NUTS regions. Regional value aggregates, drawn from Schwartz’s Human Value Scale included in the European Social Survey, are taken to indicate value-based human capital. Regression analysis shows that self-direction, indicating independent thought, action and creativity, is a stro…

  • Predicting the gross domestic product (GDP) of 289 Nuts regions in Europe with subjective indicators for human and social capital

Open Access•Mikko Weckroth, Teemu Kemppainen et al.•ARTICLE•Regional Studies Regional Science•2015•Cited by: 3•References: 10

Most of the aggregate-level analyses of the relationship between objective and subjective measures for well-being have limited themselves to the measures of national gross domestic product (GDP) and mean life satisfaction. We develop this line of research by embedding the analysis into the context of 289 NUTS (Nomenclature des Unités Territoriales Statistiques) regions in Europe and replacing the simple life satisfaction measure with measures of …
