  • The determinants of national city size distributions

    Open Access•Miguel Puente‐ajovín, Miguel Puente-Ajovín et al.•ARTICLE•Cities•2025•References: 2

This paper investigates the factors that influence the national distribution of city sizes, using data from both gridded population estimates and nighttime lights. Leveraging a global definition of human settlements, it also accounts for spatial units smaller than traditional urban centers. To address model uncertainty in identifying robust determinants of cross-country variation in urban concentration, the analysis employs Bayesian model averagi…

  • Comparing city size distributions

    Open Access•Miguel Puente‐ajovín, Marcos Sanso-Navarro et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Regional Science•2024

This paper compares the size distributions of cities when they are measured using gridded population and nighttime lights (NTLs) data. To do so, we exploit recent and accurate satellite imagery to proxy urban economic activity. Similarly to related studies, our results suggest that population is more equally distributed than lights at the country level. However, and calling assumptions established for urban NTLs into question, our findings do not…

  • The demographic impact of terrorism

    Marcos Sanso-Navarro, María Inmaculada García Mainar et al.•ARTICLE•Regional Studies•2018•Cited by: 2•References: 4

This paper studies the persistence of the effects of terrorist attacks on the urban structure at the regional level. With this aim, a dynamic differences-in-differences approach is applied to all the municipalities of the Basque Country and Navarre autonomous communities in Spain during the period 1986–2014. The results show that terrorism had a negative and transitory effect on population growth. We also find that incidents with deaths implied m…

  • The long-run relationship between R&D and regional knowledge

    Marcos Sanso-Navarro, María Vera-Cabello•ARTICLE•Regional Studies•2017•References: 4

The long-run relationship between R&D and regional knowledge: the case of France, Germany, Italy and Spain. Regional Studies. This paper incorporates time dependence into a regional knowledge-production function framework. Within this setup, the long-run dynamic behaviour of research and development (R&D) and knowledge is analysed in four European countries – France, Germany, Italy and Spain – using unit-root tests and co-integration techniques. …

  • The impact of the American Civil War on city growth

    Open Access•Marcos Sanso-Navarro, Fernando Sanz et al.•ARTICLE•Urban Studies•2015•Cited by: 2•References: 32

This paper analyses the persistence of the shock caused by the American Civil War on the relative city size distribution of the USA. Two features make the study of this conflict interesting. First, it took place at an earlier stage of the industrialisation and urbanisation processes than those previously analysed in the related literature. Second, the battles were fought in the open field, not in urban areas. In line with previous results for the…
