  • Formal Childcare Provision and Birth Trends

Open Access•Viviana Celli, Giulia Milan et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Population /…•2026

Using a counterfactual framework based on municipal data, we examine the effect of variations in the provision of Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) services for children below three years of age on births in Italy. We find that an increase in the availability of ECEC services has a positive and statistically significant effect on the number of births at the municipal level. However, these significant effects on births require two conditio…

  • The Italian payback effect

    Open Access•Viviana Celli, Chiara Ferrante•ARTICLE•Journal of European Public Policy•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 50

Grounding on the theories of economic voting and political opposition, this paper investigates whether the Italian Local Labour Markets (LLMs) most affected by the Great Recession reacted in the ballot box voting against the domestic institutions or in favour of anti-European parties. We exploit a recent econometric technique in the counterfactual framework, which adopts a non-parametric generalisation of the difference-in-differences estimator. …

  • Does R&D Expenditure Boost Economic Growth In Lagging Regions

    Open Access•Viviana Celli, Augusto Cerqua et al.•ARTICLE•Social Indicators Research•2024•Cited by: 5•References: 43

We assess the impact of the EU Regional Policy on regional economic growth by applying a new evaluation strategy, which integrates mediation analysis with a quasi-experimental framework. Using the R&D expenditure as an indicator of innovation capability, we evaluate how much of the total effect of the EU Regional Policy is due to R&D in the poorest EU regions. Consistently with the previous literature, we found a positive impact of the overall po…

  • The long-term effects of mass layoffs

Open Access•Viviana Celli, Augusto Cerqua et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Economic Geography•2023•Cited by: 3•References: 12

This article investigates the long-term reaction of local labor markets (LLMs) to a mass layoff in a manufacturing plant. We adopt a non-parametric generalization of the difference-in-differences estimator expressly developed for time-series cross-sectional data and a new comprehensive dataset. Our results suggest that, on average, a mass layoff abruptly decreases industry employment by 22%; this negative impact is persistent even 9 years later. …
