  • Gender Equality and Life Satisfaction

Open Access•Johan Graafland, Annemiek Schilpzand•ARTICLE•Journal of Happiness Studies•2025

Gender equality has been found to positively affect life satisfaction. However, the reason why gender equality affects life satisfaction remains relatively unexplored. In this paper, we hypothesize three mediators for this relationship: individual autonomy, income per capita, and generalized trust. All three variables have been found to positively affect life satisfaction. We argue that each mediator may, in turn, depend positively on gender equa…

  • The impact of perceived due care on trustworthiness and free market support in the Dutch banking sector

Open Access•Johan Graafland, Eefje de Gelder•ARTICLE•Business Ethics, the Environment…•2023

Public interest theory has argued that lack of trust in companies may reduce support for free markets. The literature did not address, however, the underlying causes of lack of trust and support of free markets in customer’s perceptions of virtuousness in economic actors. Combining public interest theory with virtue theory and stakeholder trust theory of organizations, we surmise that if customers perceive that employees of companies have insuffi…

  • Crowding in or crowding out? How non-governmental organizations and media influence intrinsic motivations toward corporate social and environmental responsibility

    Open Access•Johan Graafland, Frank G A De Bakker•ARTICLE•Journal of Environmental Planning…•2021

Motivation crowding theory examines how external intervention may undermine intrinsic motivation. Earlier research has shown that intrinsic motivation plays a decisive role in fostering environmental performance of households and consumers, but that external pressures may “crowd out” the intrinsic motivations. Similar patterns could be expected in business organizations. However, only a few studies consider crowding effects of financial incentive…

  • In Adam Smith’s Own Words

    Open Access•Johan Graafland, Thomas R Wells•ARTICLE•Journal of Business Ethics•2021

Among business ethicists, Adam Smith is widely viewed as the defender of an amoral if not anti-moral economics in which individuals’ pursuit of their private self-interest is converted by an ‘invisible hand’ into shared economic prosperity. This is often justified by reference to a select few quotations from The Wealth of Nations . We use new empirical methods to investigate what Smith actually had to say, firstly about the relationship between f…

  • When Does Economic Freedom Promote Well Being? On the Moderating Role of Long-Term Orientation

    Open Access•Johan Graafland•ARTICLE•Social Indicators Research•2020•Cited by: 6•References: 95

An increasing volume of literature has shown that economic freedom is related to life satisfaction. However, life satisfaction may not fully describe well-being because of its subjective nature. This study contributes to previous literature by extending analysis of the relationship between economic freedom and life satisfaction to other dimensions of well-being as measured by the better life index of the OECD that includes both objective and subj…
