Economic Integration and Social Adaptation of Immigrants in Greece
The study provides an empirical investigation of economic integration outcomes and social adaptation of immigrants in Greece. We focus on job satisfaction and analyse its determinants using a sample of 2,188 working immigrants residing in the Peloponnese Region in Greece. We provide robust evidence of social adaptation being a positive determinant of immigrants’ higher job satisfaction levels. Results show that most migrants are low-skilled, low …
Europeanisation and the Financial Crisis in Greece and Cyprus
We analyse the management of the financial crisis in Greece and Cyprus as an example of different domestic settings of Europeanisation. We use generalised trust as a cultural feature that underlies the domestic administrative reform processes towards EU integration. We employ a difference‐in‐differences analysis of trusting effects on public administration and compare these effects over the pre‐ to post‐2008 financial crisis period. We argue that…
Socio-cultural integration of first generation immigrants in Greece
We analyze the socio-cultural integration (SCI) of first generation immigrants as the outcome of economic integration and regularization. We focus on Greece for which similar evidence do not exist and report SCI levels and the factors that are conducive to them. We construct a simple socio-cultural integration index and analyze its variation against pre and post migration factors, using a sample of 200 first generation immigrants in Greece. Robus…
Satisfaction with Democracy and Social Capital
We analyze the relationship between social capital and satisfaction with democracy (SWD) levels. We consider SWD to denote regime support and we operationalize social capital in two different ways so as to discern between individual (micro) and country (macro) level effects. At the individual level, we operationalize social capital as composed of trust (generalized and institutional), human values (altruism, equality, tolerance, humanitarianism),…
Individual-Level Evidence on the Causal Relationship Between Social Trust and Institutional Trust
Civic Participation and Soft Social Capital
The study analyses the stock and the change of social capital in Greece at the onset of the economic crisis and tests for the effect of soft social capital elements on civic participation scores. Public servants are analysed separately as a potentially distinct group of citizens in terms of their civic engagement profile. At the empirical level, we identify social capital via the measurement of six main constructs, namely, social trust, social al…
Rent seeking or corruption? An analysis of income satisfaction and perceptions of institutions in Greece
The paper analyses the relationship between market allocations of income and individuals’ perceptions over certain institutional characteristics in order to shed light on the underlying societal and business attitudes toward rent-seeking and corruption. The theoretical context is used to construct a set of five hypotheses which are empirically tested with the use of subjective micro data provided by the European Social Value survey. Results indic…
Is Greece a Rent Seeking Society? A Research on the Relationship Between Entrepreneurship, Trust and Institutions
Urban Tourism Competitiveness
Firms are acknowledged to be important actors involved in the deployment of resources available to a tourism destination. In turn, successful tourism firms can contribute to building the competitive advantage of tourism destinations through affecting a destination's tourism product or service. The present study analyses business performance in urban tourism using networks and entrepreneurial perceptions over a city's asset base as a framework of …
