Drivers of differentiation between EU Member‐states in the UN General Assembly
The European Union (EU) has laboured hard to gain the right to make oral interventions in the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in pursuit of a more active international role. At the same time, though, EU member‐states continue to take the floor to make their own interventions, thus differentiating – but not necessarily distancing – their stance from the officially expressed EU position. In that respect, it is important to examine the driver…
The Changing Security Landscape in South-Eastern Mediterranean
The main goal of this paper is to shed light on Turkey’s power status as a rising state in the wider region of the South-Eastern Mediterranean and test its strategies to change the balance of power in this region. The formation of the EU negotiating strategy at the UN
Existing research on the European Union’s (EU) activities at the international level typically pertains to how the EU acts, bargains and performs. However, scholarship less frequently examines how the EU formulates its negotiating strategy at international negotiation fora. Our analysis attempts to fill this gap by presenting an analytical framework to map the different features and parameters that determine and condition the EU negotiating strat…
In quest of a single European Union voice in the United Nations General Assembly
In May 2011, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) passed Resolution 65/276 that enhances the European Union (EU) institutional mode of representation in the UNGA and other multilateral fora operating under its auspices. This followed an earlier, failed attempt that caused much embarrassment and political turmoil in the EU. The article examines the politics of this resolution, tracing its background logic, its origins and the political inter…
The European Union's visibility and coherence at the United Nations General Assembly
The Lisbon Treaty brought about significant changes regarding the EU's external representation system with new institutional structures set forward to enhance the role of the EU as a unified global actor. In this article, we focus on the UN General Assembly examining whether the coherence and visibility of the EU has increased in the post-Lisbon era. We operationalize and measure both concepts on the basis of oral interventions made by EU and EU …
