Does coping style mediate the relationship between knowledge and psychosocial outcomes in women with atrial fibrillation
These findings highlight the crucial role of coping style in mediating the association between AF knowledge and psychosocial outcomes. As such, interventions aimed at increasing patient knowledge of AF may be more effective if adaptive problem-solving coping strategies are also demonstrated to these patients. Additionally, modification of maladaptive coping strategies as part of the psychological management of patients with AF is highly recommend…
Unraveling the Complexity of Cardiac Distress
Specific experiences of distress appear to be highly prevalent in people who have had a recent cardiac event. Understanding these specific fears, worries and stressors has important implications for the identification and management of post-event mental health and, in turn, for supporting patients in their post-event cardiac recovery
Health-Care Professionals Perceived Barriers to Effective Cancer Pain Management in the Home Hospice Setting
Hospice health-care professionals (HCP) evaluate and manage cancer pain in patient homes. This study explores HCP's perceptions of barriers that affect pain management for home hospice cancer patients. A convenience sample of 20 experienced hospice HCP were recruited from a regional hospice agency. Data were collected through two focus groups using semistructured interviews and analyzed using a constant comparative approach to generate themes. An…

Carers of people aged over 50 with physical impairment, memory loss and dementia
While studies investigating factors associated with carer burden suggest that intellectual impairment and behavioural disturbance in the care recipient are more demanding for the carer than physical impairment, comparative research findings are equivocal. Family carers of people with a long-term illness or disability were identified through a survey of 26,000 households in Victoria, Australia. Focusing on carers of those aged over 50 years, three…
A Classification of Family Carers’ Problems as Described by Counsellors
As part of a wider study of counselling for family carers of relatives with special health needs, we sought to identify the type of problems they present to community counselling services. Counsellors from forty-seven health and disability organisations in Victoria, Australia, were surveyed. Fourteen main problem areas were identified across the diversity of disability types, organisational structures, and family life-stages. These were divisible…
Family Carers
The role of the family carer of a relative with a long-term illness or disability has been the focus of increasing research interest. However, few studies have examined the differential experiences of caring for parents or spouses compared to caring for children. The community-based sample of family carers recruited for the present study included all ages, disabilities, relationship groups, women, and men. Of the carers identified through a rando…
Women with Multiple Roles
As part of a wider study of family caregiving, a sample of 297 women caring for an ageing parent were identified through a random statewide telephone survey involving over 26,000 households in Victoria, Australia. In addition to elder care, half these women were in paid employment and a third had dependent children. Overload was highest for carers with multiple roles, particularly those of parent or worker. Resentment in the caring role was highe…

Second Language Reading and Testing in Bilingual Education

The author cities more realistic assumptions based on research in language acquisition and the reading process to provide guidelines for teaching ESL in bilingual elementary school settings. The guidelines stress the need for ex…
