  • Modelling structural breaks in the tourism-led growth hypothesis

Open Access•Nikeel Nishkar Kumar, Arvind Patel•ARTICLE•Current Issues in Tourism•2024

Structural breaks represent periods of turmoil that may influence how tourism affects economic growth. Current research on the tourism-led growth hypothesis (TLGH) measures the effect of structural breaks using dummy variables in regression models. However, the drawback of this approach is that there could be multiple structural breaks which result in an overfitting problem and reduce degrees of freedom in small samples. It also becomes difficult…

  • Modelling the impact of Covid-19 in small pacific island countries

Nikeel Nishkar Kumar, Arvind Patel•ARTICLE•Current Issues in Tourism•2022

This paper studies the economic impact of COVID-19 in Fiji, Tonga, and Vanuatu. The UNWTO’s International Tourism 2020 Scenarios and the World Bank’s projected decline in remittance flows are treated as negative COVID-19 led shocks in the nonlinear autoregressive distributed lag (NARDL) model. Negative tourism shocks are significant for all three countries, whereas negative remittance shocks are significant for Tonga only. Thus, the economic effe…

  • Modelling tourism competitiveness in small Pacific island countries

Open Access•Nikeel Nishkar Kumar, Arvind Patel et al.•ARTICLE•Tourism Economics•2022

This study models overall and bilateral tourism competitiveness in small Pacific island countries (PICs), namely, Cook Islands, Fiji, Tonga, Samoa and Vanuatu. The pooled mean group approach, which corrects for cross-sectional dependence and non-stationarity, is used for estimation with quarterly data from 2002 to 2019. The findings indicate that for Fiji and Vanuatu, other PICs are competing destinations and that Fiji and Vanuatu face the strong…

  • Why does currency denomination in external liabilities of small island developing states matter? Evidence from Fiji

Open Access•Devendra Kumar Jain, Rup Singh et al.•ARTICLE•Asia & the Pacific Policy Studies•2022•References: 1

The valuation effects on international investment position induced by the exchange rate volatility are not uniform or easily manageable in small and vulnerable economies when compared with larger developing or developed countries. To investigate the underlying dynamics, we developed a foreign currency exposure index over the period 2006–2019. The positive reading of the index suggests that though Fiji has a high net negative international investm…

  • Mixed frequency evidence of the tourism growth relationship in small Island developing states

In this study, we examine the effect of tourism on economic growth in Tonga. We apply Ghysels Beta-MIDAS approach to estimate the elasticity of tourism, identify breaks with the multiple break test, and test for causality using the mixed frequency VAR approach. We utilize a sample from 1995 quarter 1 to 2018 quarter 4. The results indicate that the long-run effect of tourism is 0.06. Two structural breaks are identified, and both have negative gr…

  • The Effect of Remittances on Economic Growth in Kyrgyzstan and Macedonia

Open Access•Ronald Ravinesh Kumar, Peter Josef Stauvermann et al.•ARTICLE•International Migration•2017•Cited by: 5•References: 7

Kyrgyzstan and Macedonia have experienced a reasonable increase in remittances over the last twenty‐five years. Subsequently, the extent to which remittances can be instrumental for economic development of the two countries has gained serious attention in recent development dialogues. The aim of this study is to examine the impact of remittances versus financial development on the economic growth of the two counties, complementing the burgeoning …
