Inflation expectations and international travel demand
This note incorporates household inflation expectations, which are central to consumption theory but overlooked in tourism economics, into models of international travel demand. Using monthly data on U.S. visitor arrivals to Canada, I find that a 1 % increase in household inflation expectations is associated with a 0.42 % rise in tourist arrivals by air. Land-based tourist arrivals also exhibit a positive association, although the evidence is wea…
How the Question Shaped the Answer
Objective I investigate the impact of changes in the format of survey questions on reported inflation perceptions. In 2022, the Reserve Bank of New Zealand replaced a range‐based elicitation method with an open‐ended format requiring respondents to provide numerical estimates. The consequences of this shift for measured inflation perceptions remain unclear, and this paper is devoted to evaluating the impact of that design change on reported infla…
How important are prices in long-haul travel? Evidence from New Zealand
Tourism demand theory postulates that tourists’ incomes, prices in destination countries, and prices in tourists’ countries of origin are key determinants of tourism demand—but must this hold for long-haul travel? We find the answer to be no. By analyzing three international tourist archetypes arriving in New Zealand, a remote island nation, from seven countries, we demonstrate that neither incomes nor prices affect tourism demand in the short ru…
Flush toilet use and its impact on health and non‐health expenditures
This study analysed the effects of flush toilet use on health and non‐health expenditures incurred by rural Chinese. The instrumental‐variable‐based Tobit and endogenous treatment regression models were used to analyse the 2016 China Labour Force Dynamics Survey data while addressing the selection bias inherent in flush toilet use. The results showed that by improving rural residents' physical and mental health, flush toilet use reduced per capit…
Does agricultural cooperative membership influence off‐farm work decisions of farm couples
Membership in agricultural cooperatives may influence intra‐household decisions regarding the division of household labor. However, the linkages between cooperative membership and labor allocation remain unexplored. To fill this gap, we examine the impact of cooperative membership on off‐farm work decisions of couples engaged in farming, using data collected from 595 banana farmers in China. The recursive bivariate probit model and endogenous‐tre…

Business cycles and tourism imports in the South Pacific
The demand for international tourism in Australia and New Zealand is vital to the South Pacific’s tourism-reliant islands. However, at the time of this study these two countries find themselves in precarious economic situations. The question addressed by this study is, will tourism imports in these two countries pick up on the back of economic recovery? We answer this question using time-difference analysis and the newly developed Hamilton filter…

Happiness and farm productivity
Purpose The purpose of this study is to explore the relationship between farmers' happiness and farm productivity, taking maize production in China as an example. Design/methodology/approach The conditional mixed process model is employed to account for the endogeneity that inevitably arises in regression models studying happiness and estimate the 2015 China Household Finance Survey data. Findings The empirical results show that a higher level of…

Does mobile payment adoption affect the level and inequality of food expenditure
This study examines the impact of mobile payment adoption on the level and inequality of food expenditure using the 2017 Chinese General Social Survey data. We employ the Gini coefficient to measure food expenditure inequality and use the two-stage predictor substitution approach to address the endogeneity of mobile payment adoption. The results show that mobile payment adoption is associated with lower food expenditure. Specifically, mobile paym…
