When Herstory Goes Viral
This article examines the rise of herstory content on Douyin to explore how feminist resistance takes shape within China’s platform environment. Drawing on digital ethnography, we develop the concept of popular resistance, a form of platform-mediated resistance whose popularity serves both as a condition of political traction and as a mechanism of containment. To clarify this duality, we identify two dimensions: (a) popularity on the platform, dr…
Wounded mothers, platformed pain
This article examines how mom creators on Xiaohongshu articulate maternal pain and reproductive suffering as a form of digital victimhood. I conceptualize these articulations as victimized motherhood, a platform-mediated mode of maternal subjectivity that operates at the intersection of political critique, platform governance, and creator economy. Victimized motherhood unfolds through three processes: politicizing pain, by framing maternal suffer…
The Industrialization of Digital Entrepreneurship
With the rise of multichannel networks (MCNs), China’s influencer economy has developed along a highly industrialized trajectory. This article examines that process through the case of MCN-affiliated beauty influencers on Weibo. Drawing on a mixed-methods study of 17,629 posts from the top 100 beauty influencers, combining topic modeling with qualitative textual analysis, we identify 4 patterned domains of content production: commercial promotion…

Pawns in the power struggle
This study examines how digital creators navigate the precarious Chinese digital creative industries (DCCIs), shaped by multi-channel networks (MCNs), platform logic, and intensifying state intervention. Drawing on interviews with 34 creators, I identified three challenges facing Chinese creators: (1) dual exploitation by volatile platforms and capricious MCN management; (2) erosion of creative autonomy under MCN gatekeeping and state oversight; …
Marginalisation in the name of empowerment
Drawing upon Feminist Standpoint Theory and interviews with 25 rural women from Northwest China, this study explores the standpoints of marginalised rural women on the trendy notion of female empowerment in Chinese consumer culture. The finding reveals that Chinese rural women are no longer excluded from the consumer feminist joy associated primarily with their Western and urban counterparts. While commodified feminist concepts tend to imply libe…
Unveiling the Contested Digital Feminism
Through a qualitative analysis of feminist posts shared by Chinese beauty influencers, this study explores the political potential and limitations of their engagements in digital feminism on Weibo. Chinese beauty influencers show the potential to shape everyday feminist discourses and promote female solidarity on Weibo. However, beauty influencers' feminist practices represent a form of contested activism, situated at the intersection of state go…
Digital Labor Under the State/Capitalist Duopoly
With the rise of Multi-Channel Networks (MCNs), Chinese digital creative industries are no longer a realm of self-entrepreneurship but are dominated by professional service agencies and platforms. At the same time, the Chinese-style market economy and state-led platformization have spawned a unique platform ecology, shaping Chinese digital creative industries and labor subjectivity in its own unique way. This study contributes to digital entrepre…

Digital labor in the state-led/capitalist complex
Contemporary Chinese digital creative industries are no longer a realm of self-entrepreneurship, with multi-channel networks (MCNs) playing a significant role in shaping the digital labor market. This study focuses on the multifaceted Chinese digital labor regimes characterized by capitalism, national agendas, and state regulation. Through a qualitative analysis of 203 recruitment advertisements of major MCNs and 17 interviews of digital laborers…
Female empowerment is being commercialized
This paper critically analyses the newly emerging girl crush concept in the K-pop scene, exploring how this new claimed female-empowering trend interplays with K-pop fans’ perception of feminism and empowerment. Discourse analysis reveals that K-pop fans perceive the girl crush concept as a highly commodified form of feminism that essentially safeguards the patriarchal status quo and underlying gender power relations of the K-pop industry. Althou…
