  • Slow neglect in Kasai

    Open Access•Nikolaos Toumaras•ARTICLE•Time & Society•2026

Protracted humanitarian crises are often described as neglected, yet the temporal organisation of neglect remains poorly understood. This article examines how neglect is produced and lived in postconflict Kasai in the Democratic Republic of the Congo by focusing on the interaction between institutional and everyday time. Drawing on a qualitative multi-temporal ethnographic study that combines life history interviews, temporal mapping workshops, p…

  • Still here, online

    Open Access•Nikolaos Toumaras•ARTICLE•Cultural Geographies•2026

Rural settlements in northwest Bulgaria are often portrayed as emptying spaces marked by ageing populations, derelict infrastructures and policy neglect. Yet many of these villages sustain lively digital afterlives. The article examines how residents, seasonal returnees and emigrants use social media to narrate, contest and endure the abandonment of two small villages. A qualitative digital ethnography of Facebook groups, messaging exchanges and …

  • Digital diaries and rural democracy

    Open Access•Nikolaos Toumaras•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning C…•2026

This article examines how such diary initiatives operate as place-tethered digital infrastructures of participatory …

  • Indisciplining the unknown

    Open Access•Nikolaos Toumaras•ARTICLE•Artnodes•2026

Micro-collections of art without known authorship are emerging in small community spaces across Europe and Africa, yet their dynamics remain under-examined. The article analyses three interconnected initiatives in which community members, curators, and researchers collaborate to salvage, organise, and circulate unknown artworks. A qualitative, multisited case study design combines ethnographic fieldwork, semi-structured interviews, and participat…

  • Between restriction and flow in the borders of the Democratic Republic of Congo

    Nikolaos Toumaras•ARTICLE•Regional Studies•2026

This study contrasts two Democratic Republic of Congo borders to show how everyday practices recast borders. At Kinshasa–Brazzaville, high visa fees, multilayer checks and petty levies reduce crossings and entrench a revenue gate. Kasumbalesa–Chililabombwe, by contrast, couples light formal control with trader-run logistics, loader cooperatives, WhatsApp convoys and broker chains, creating a busy link for circular trade. Using mobility diaries, i…

    Open Access•Nikolaos Toumaras•ARTICLE•Social Media + Society•2025•References: 49

Digital activists play a pivotal role in fostering local democracy, civic participation, and social advocacy across sub-Saharan Africa. Using technological, social, and discursive layers of communication, these activists navigate complex socio-political environments to amplify marginalized voices and facilitate local governance dialogues. Platforms like WhatsApp and Facebook enable real-time communication, trust-building, and narrative framing wi…
