  • Tumblr’s combative interactions, in-action and assemblage in anime fandom posts

Indira Neill Hoch•ARTICLE•The Journal of Fandom Studies•2025

This article uses multimodal discourse analysis to address responses to perceived sexualization on Tumblr through the explication of a specific post and its reblogs. Tumblr’s particular affordances in the period around 2018–19 prevented (and continues to prevent) discussion between and among fans, in contrast to other online spaces, such as message boards. Instead, this post, utilizing content from anime Kill la Kill (2013) serves as material for…

  • Tumblr Meta-Fandom

  • Nostalgia for the New

Open Access•Indira Neill Hoch•ARTICLE•AoIR Selected Papers of Internet…•2020

"This is the first book to take an extensive look at the many different types of users and cultures that comprise the popular social media platform Tumblr. Though it does not receive nearly as much attention as other social media such as Twitter or Facebook, Tumblr and its users have been hugely influential in creating and shifting popular culture, especially progressive youth culture, with the New York Times referring to 2014 as the dawning of t…

    Open Access•Indira Neill Hoch•ARTICLE•Social Media + Society•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 35

On 24 March 2018, Tumblr terminated 84 user accounts identified as being 'linked to Internet Research Agency or IRA (a group closely tied to the Russian government) posing as members of the Tumblr community.' In response, Tumblr deleted the blogs and accounts of these 84 users but allowed reblogs of their posts to continue to circulate openly on the platform. Through a case study of posts originating with one IRA account, Lagonegirl, and qualitat…
