  • Intergroup contact in virtual reality

    Open Access•Jorge Peña, Camren Allen et al.•ARTICLE•New Media & Society•2026•Referências: 66

This study employed virtual reality (VR) to examine how avatar embodiment (self vs stranger), virtual human race (ingroup vs outgroup), and contact valence (positive vs negative) influence intergroup attitudes. US participants ( N = 262) assigned to avatars displaying a stranger’s face, rather than their own, showed greater acceptance of outgroup virtual humans. Perceived identifiability mediated the influence of avatar face on self-other overlap…

Camren Allen, Enoch Montes et al.•ARTICLE•Health Communication•2024

    380) were exposed to a stereotype threat, lift, or control condition image and then engaged in a running task. Accelerometers recorded forward-backward movement, upward-downward movement, and sideways balance. Stereotype threat exposure increased state anxiety relative to the control condition. In addition, forward-backward movement was linked to state anxiety and participants' sex. Moreover, women exposed to stereotype threat who experienced inc…

  • Virtual leaders

Open Access•Jorge Peña, Mishael Aridi Barake et al.•ARTICLE•Computers in Human Behavior•2023

Participants (N = 222) engaged in a resource allocation task after customizing avatars that combined their physical self with the traits of democratic or authoritarian business leaders relative to a control condition. Authoritarian condition participants showed decreased altruism than those in the democratic condition. …

They were randomly assigned to onscreen motion-capturing avatars displaying either participant or stranger faces dressed in sports or formal clothes. Participants assigned to avatars displaying their own face showed increased cardiac frequency compared with those ex…

  • The effects of avatar customization and virtual human mind perception

    Open Access•Jorge Peña, Matthew Craig et al.•ARTICLE•New Media & Society•2022•Referências: 12

This study investigated how “teacher” avatar customization and exposure to “learner” virtual humans who display mind-affected participants’ behavior and emotions in a re-creation of Milgram’s obedience experiment. Female participants customized avatars that merged their physical self with hero, antihero, or villain archetypes and then interacted with a mindful or non-mindful virtual human; 82.8% of participants went above the maximum electric sho…

  • Face the Uncanny

Open Access•William D Weisman, Jorge Peña et al.•ARTICLE•Cyberpsychology Behavior and…•2021

    228) examined how exposure to a talking head doppelganger created by an artificial intelligence (AI) program influenced affect-based trust toward AIs. Using a 3 (talking head featuring the participant's or a stranger's face, audio-only condition) by 2 (pro-AI pitch and anti-AI pitch playback) design, we uncovered that exposure to a talking head featuring the participant's face instead of a stranger's face increased uncanny valley perceptions. Participants were randomly assigned to present themselves as extraverted or introverted in pilot tested public or private virtual environments. The hypotheses and data analysis strategy were preregistered, and the study had sufficient a priori statistical power. T…
