Route repetition and activity spaces
Activity spaces are a longstanding geographic concept used to describe the mobility patterns of an individual. The proliferation of disaggregate space-time data now enables a sophisticated network-orientated approach to measuring and visualising these spaces. The current study leverages individual Global Positioning System trajectories from 365 participants over a seven-day period to introduce ‘route repetition’, a novel network-based metric quan…
The Social Environment Matters for Telomere Length and Internalizing Problems During Adolescence
Depression and anxiety symptoms are on the rise among adolescents. With increasing evidence that cellular aging may be associated with depressive and anxiety symptoms, there is an urgent need to identify the social environment context that may moderate this link. This study addresses this research gap by investigating the moderating role of the social environment on the relation between telomere length and emotional health among adolescents. Part…
No Place Like Home? Local Crime and Older Adults' Time at Home
Home is a locus of everyday activity among a growing population of Americans who are 'aging in place,' and for whom leaving the home is generally thought to benefit quality of life and well-being. Sociological and criminological theory has often assumed that higher levels of local crime constrain individuals' activities to the residential environment, although few studies have empirically tested this assumption. We use longitudinal smartphone-bas…
An American in Germany
This article examines the journal entries of Tracy Strong Jr. that he wrote in the latter half of 1940 while serving as a representative of the International Red Cross to the German POW camps holding Allied prisoners in central Germany. Despite his many critical observations, Strong strove to maintain a neutral and even-handed attitude toward Nazi Germany, as well as pacifist convictions that condemned the war itself. In 1941-1942, he worked as a…

The Struggle for the West
In recent years debates about the nature and future of the West have been high on the political agenda. Prognoses of the West’s imminent demise have been countered by those arguing for its continued relevance, or those arguing that while the West will survive its nature, and the balance of power between its constituent units, is transforming. This book argues that understanding contemporary developments requires subjecting the very idea of the We…
Reassessing Putin's Project
Putin's aim was not to isolate Russia from international society but to challenge the West's claim to define its norms
Beyond East–West
Since the end of the Cold War it has become common for Finnish academics and politicians alike to frame debates about Finnish national identity in terms of locating Finland somewhere along a continuum between East and West. Indeed, for politicians, properly locating oneself (and therefore Finland) along this continuum has often been seen as central to the winning and losing of elections. For example, the 1994 referendum on EU membership was large…
