Pre-service teachers’ readiness for inclusive education of children with physical disabilities in Germany
We examined pre-service teachers’ attitudes towards inclusive education and their attitudes towards people with physical disabilities. Both kinds of attitudes were associated with opinions about teacher responsibilities for care and support activities regarding children with physical disabilities in school. They also predicted the willingness to conduct these activities. Self-rated knowledge in several areas related to teaching children with phys…
Testing as a learning tool in special education
The present study examined retrieval-based learning in a sample of 38 students with a diagnosis of general learning disability attending a special school in Germany. The learning material comprised items representative of everyday teaching (foreign language vocabulary). Three experimental factors were manipulated. Retrieval practice was compared with restudy, English items were compared with Swahili items, and performance in a posttest was compar…
Stereotype threat reduces academic performance of students in special schools for general learning disabilities
Preventing fixation
Creative problem-solving can be impeded by mental impasses which are caused by fixation on associated but misguiding ideas. Recently, research has focused on the question of which processes might be involved in overcoming fixation and how it can be prevented from occurring altogether. In the present study, we investigated whether initially encoded fixation words can be forgotten by means of item-method directed forgetting, a procedure in which pa…
The Influence of Perceived Fairness on Trust in Human‐Computer Interaction
Fairness is a fundamental principle in human social interactions that influences subsequent behavioural decisions. As artificial intelligence (AI) becomes more prevalent, human‐computer interactions have emerged as a new mode of social interaction. This study investigates the differences in fairness perceptions and their impact on trust decisions in human‐human and human‐AI contexts using a mixed experimental design of 2 (proposer identity: AI/hu…
Job discrimination against applicants with the Moebius syndrome
The main characteristic of Moebius syndrome is a lack of facial expressions, which involves stigmatization in many social contexts. We examined whether an applicant with this syndrome would be rated lower in personnel selection despite having equal qualifications. In two experiments, participants rated two applicants. Ratings of an applicant with Moebius syndrome were significantly lower when videos of job interviews had been watched without givi…
Retrieval‐based learning in special education
Retrieval‐based learning has been investigated in various populations. The present study examined retrieval‐based learning in a sample of students at a special‐needs school with educational tracks for learning and mental development. In addition, a comparison group of students at a regular school was examined. Learning conditions were manipulated within participants. In a first session, participants either received restudy cycles only, or they re…
Protecting against mental impasses
Suppression-induced forgetting of motor sequences
Two experiments examined the effects of deliberately suppressing retrieval of motor sequences on their later recall, in the think/no-think paradigm (Anderson & Green, 2001). After several motor sequences had been associated with individual cues through repeated practice cycles, a subset of these sequences was retrieved in response to their respective cues (think trials), whereas other sequences were suppressed. In such no-think trials, cues were …
Specifying the mechanisms behind benefits of saving-enhanced memory
Selective directed forgetting of motor sequences
We examined selective directed forgetting in motor memory using a new variant of a three-list approach, to distinguish between accounts of directed forgetting. Participants consecutively studied three lists (L1, L2, and L3) of four sequential four-finger movements each. After studying L2, participants in the forget group were instructed to selectively forget the just studied four items of L2 but to retain the previously studied four items of L1, …
Gender Role Orientation Moderates Effects of Stereotype Activation on Test Performances
We investigated the moderation of effects of activated gender stereotypes on the performance of women in tests of different ability domains. The Bem Sex Role Inventory assessed masculinity and femininity. The difference of the masculinity and femininity scores served as a continuous independent variable of gender role orientation. Only participants with feminine gender role orientation suffered from stereotype activation with regard to mental rot…
