The Associations Between Instructional Leadership Skills, Practice, Self-Efficacy, and Professional Well-Being for Early Learning and K-12 Leaders in the United States
Leaders in the United States in both the ECE and K-12 sectors often feel underprepared for the role, particularly in the area of instructional leadership. Perceived deficits in preparation can be harmful to the self-efficacy essential for leaders’ job engagement and role longevity. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the relationships between leadership skills, instructional leadership practice and self-efficacy, and professional well-bei…
Leading well
Educational leaders have stressful jobs that have only intensified in recent years. They often feel unprepared for the demands of the role; high workloads and time pressures cut into time for personal relationships, interests, and sleep. Research suggests that sleep quality, one particular aspect of sleep behavior separate from sleep duration, is likely an important part of educational leaders’ ability to lead effectively, manage workload and res…
The discursive tactics of perpetuating white normativity in public education
In recent years, state policies banning “divisive concepts” have proliferated as part of a coordinated effort to undermine racial justice by framing critical discussions of race as “indoctrination” and imposing ideological restrictions on curriculum and pedagogy. Using critical policy discourse analysis informed by a critical study of whiteness, this paper examines how 22 policy documents from 18 states operate discursively to shape the parameter…
Good Citizenship and the “True and Inspiring Story of America”
In the aftermath of the Capitol Insurrection, many states sought to bolster civic education through efforts such as the South Dakota Civics and History Initiative (SDCHI). This study examined the SDCHI through a Critical Policy Analysis and Critical Race Theory lens to understand how the initiative and related rhetoric reflected, protected, and perpetuated Whiteness as property. To answer this question, we conducted an inductive content analysis …
An intersectional examination of the opportunity gap in science
Cultural Reproduction Theory and Schooling
The purpose of this study is to extend the literature on cultural reproduction theory and schools by problematizing the relationship between student background and student achievement. Using Program for International Student Assessment 2012 data, we analyze a series of random effects analyses of covariance to test the relationship between student social and cultural capital variables and student opportunity to learn (OTL) in math class for US 15-…
In a very different voice
Across 3 small studies, 80 female undergraduates were confronted with the dilemma of deciding whom-themselves or another research participant-to assign to a positive consequences task, leaving the other to do a dull, boring task. In Study 1, where morality was not mentioned, 16 of 20 assigned themselves to the positive consequences task, even though in retrospect only 1 said this was moral. In Studies 2 and 3, a moral strategy was suggested: eith…
