Feminist pedagogy within constraints
Feminists have long critiqued an overreliance on traditional assessment practices such as the essay or exam, highlighting that these can reinforce gendered or other hierarchies in education. Feminists have supported calls for a greater diversity of assessment in general, while valorizing reflective forms of assessment in particular. We identify three principles of feminist pedagogy: engaged pedagogy, addressing hierarchies, action-oriented learni…
Feminist institutionalism and women’s political leadership in devolution era Scotland
Invoking intersectionality
Over the past ten years the concept of intersectionality has become increasingly popular in feminist activism. Yet, how intersectionality is used within grassroots movements remains understudied. This article explores intersectionality in feminism within the radical left using a case study of the 2014 Scottish independence movement. The article draws on analysis of 37 semi-structured interviews carried out during the referendum campaign of 2014. …
Feminism and Solidarity on the Left
In the context of efforts to revive and reconfigure the left, fraught solidarity relations between feminism and other left forces are again under the political spotlight. This article revisits the widespread use of the ‘unhappy marriage’ metaphor to characterise these relations, given that metaphors play a significant role in structuring political discourse and action. We argue that the metaphor has been used in uncritical and limiting ways, and …
The relationship between criminality and home background
There are two extensive literatures which deal with this subject. One is that on criminality, defining the distinctions between morality and cultural definitions. The other is on how parents ought to influence their offspring. And there is also a smaller literative on the causal or statistical relationship between the two. This research tradition attempts to isolate particular hypotheses—like lone parents or genetics. What is missing is both a st…

Peer Group Pressure Within and Outside School
This paper is based on an empirical study of a sample of 25 young people who have all had the experience of being excluded from school (and who are all young offenders). The research was based on qualitative explorations and memories of the subjects' overall experience of school, through lengthy semi‐structured interviews. These interviews were designed to elicit information in an open way through the encouragement to talk confidentially and anon…
Bullying as a Formative Influence
Most of the research literature on schools has focused on school management, organisation, the curriculum and teaching. There is comparatively little research on the experience of school from the point of view of children. Despite growing concern, and an increase in strategies to combat bullying, relatively little is known about the nature and underlying causes of the phenomenon. The overall concern of this research is to explore the correlation …
