  • Actionable knowledge for agroecological transformation

Open Access•Stephen Leitheiser, Darleen van Dam et al.•ARTICLE•Sustainability Science•2026

Transdisciplinarity and the production of actionable knowledge with and for societal actors is a central feature of sustainability science. Yet questions remain about whether such efforts genuinely challenge the structural roots of unsustainability or inadvertently reinforce them in pursuit of proximate impacts. This paper responds to calls for more critical monitoring and evaluation by evaluating a transdisciplinary Horizon Europe project, Agroe…

Social innovation is a process in which local communities build social and cultural capital to address challenges and social needs. Open Access•Richard J Hewitt, Nicholas Bradley et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Energy Research•2019

Citizen-driven Renewable Energy (RE) projects of various kinds, known collectively as community energy (CE), have an important part to play in the worldwide transition to cleaner energy systems. On the basis of evidence from 8 European countries, we investigate CE, over approximately the last 50 years (c.1970-2018), through the lens of Social Innovation (SI). We carry out a detailed review of literature around the social dimension of renewable en…

  • Human values as catalysts and consequences of social innovations

Open Access•Simo Sarkki, Andrej Ficko et al.•ARTICLE•Forest Policy and Economics•2019•Cited by: 5•References: 24

We studied the role of human values in social innovations (SIs) in four forest-dependent communities (FDCs) in Europe. We draw on 71 semi-structured interviews with FDC members in Finland, Slovenia, the UK and Ukraine, and a survey of householders (n = 150) and focus group interviews with related stakeholders in Ukraine. The material collected was analyzed with mixed methods with respect to relational values as catalysts and consequences of SI. R…

  • Beyond ‘Hobby Farming’

Open Access•Lee‐ann Sutherland, Carla Barlagne et al.•ARTICLE•Agriculture and Human Values•2019•Cited by: 10•References: 21

In this paper we develop a typology of ‘non-commercial’ approaches to farming, based on a survey of a representative sample of farmers in Scotland, United Kingdom. In total, 395 (16.6% of the sample) farmers indicated that they do not seek to make a profit on their farms. We estimate that these non-commercial approaches to farming are utilised on at least 13% of agricultural land in Scotland. As such, non-commercial farming (NCF) is not a margina…
