Assessment in the Advent of AI: Examining the Vulnerabilities of Undergraduate Exams
Course-Based Undergraduate Research Experiences as a Potential Cure-All for Applied Research Training and Real-World Knowledge Acquisition
Calls have been made for higher education to offer students hands-on and experiential learning opportunities. This paper explores the development and implementation of an advanced undergraduate research methods course offered in fall 2020 and 2022. After initially conducting research on its first offering in 2020, the instructor navigated changes based on self-reflective, student, and community partner feedback. Students, agency partners, and the…
In Search of Greater Understanding: The Impact of Mastery Learning on Social Science Education
Mastery learning approaches were designed to improve student learning and elevate the level of understanding across a broader swath of students. These approaches operate under the belief that all students are capable of learning if given enough time. Little research has examined the utility or applicability of a mastery learning approach for social sciences outside of research methods courses. This study provides a review of the relevant literatu…
The gold rush and afterwards: Homicide in San Francisco, 1849–2003
We compared the characteristics of homicide in San Francisco during the Gold Rush epidemic (1849-1860) to the characteristics of homicides during a more recent epidemic (1965-1980), and during a period when the homicide rates were relatively low (1921-1964). The data were based on reports from coroners, newspapers, the San Francisco Police Department, and the census. Time period was used to predict the characteristics of each incident in our mult…
Great Expectations Unmet: The Impact of Adolescent Educational Expectations on Deviant Coping During the Transition to Adulthood
Previous research has shown that during adolescence, holding high expectations of college education serves as a protective factor for delinquency and substance use. Little is known whether the protective factor of college expectations extends into young adulthood, especially among ambitious youth who do not earn a degree. Using longitudinal data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health, this research focuses on the longer term ef…
Thinking About Thinking in Criminal Justice Education
Metacognitive learning techniques encourage students to engage course material in such a way that facilitates learning, retention, and application of information gained from a course. While metacognition has begun to be widely used in higher education, little is known about its applicability to criminal justice education. Using a sample of undergraduate students from core criminal justice major courses, this study assesses the impact of metacogni…
Erasing the Mark of a Criminal Record: Examining the Effect of Education on Ex-Offender Employment
The United States has the largest population of citizens with criminal records and the stigma associated with these records. This stigma encountered by ex-offenders is thought to contribute to the high recidivism rates currently observed through blocking opportunities for advancement in conventional society. While previous research has noted the existence of negative stigma, little research has been conducted to examine potential methods for redu…
Sexual Assault as a Crime Against Young People
Age and sexual assault during robberies
Age and Sexual Assault in Correctional Facilities: A Blocked Opportunity Approach
We use data from the National Incident‐Based Reporting System (NIBRS) to examine the effects of age on the risk of sexual and physical assault in prisons and jails. Our evidence suggests that male inmates of all ages tend to sexually assault young men. The preference for the young is much stronger for sexual than for physical assault, which suggests that the young are sexually assaulted because of their sexual attractiveness rather than because o…
