  • Can differences in publisher size account for the relatively low prices of the journals available to master’s universities through commercial publishers’ databases? The importance of price discriminat…

    Open Access•William H Walters•ARTICLE•Scientometrics•2022

Using price quotes and invoices for thousands of full-text databases and single-journal subscriptions, this study confirms that for a typical master’s university, the journals acquired through commercial publishers’ databases cost substantially less than those acquired through the databases of scholarly societies, universities, and other nonprofits. Moreover, the lower prices of commercial publishers’ journals cannot be readily attributed to publ…

  • Characteristics of the Most Productive U.S. Sociology Faculty and Departments: Institution Type, Gender, and Journal Concentration

    Esther Isabelle Wilder, William H Walters•ARTICLE•Sociological Quarterly•2020•Cited by: 2•References: 25

Using data for a sample of 2,132 individuals, we examine the characteristics of the sociology faculty and departments that ranked highest on any of four measures of publishing productivity over the 2013–2017 period. While the most productive men tend to work at the top research universities, women with comparable publishing records are especially likely to be found among the most productive faculty at other types of institutions. This suggests th…

  • Publishing Productivity of Sociologists at American Colleges and Universities: Institution Type, Gender, and Other Correlates of Book and Article Counts

    Open Access•Esther Isabelle Wilder, William H Walters•ARTICLE•Sociological Perspectives•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 55

This study examines the 2013-2017 publishing productivity of sociology faculty at six types of colleges and universities (e.g., research universities, master's institutions, and top liberal arts colleges) based on publication counts for articles, articles in high-impact journals, books, and books from high-impact publishers. We compare the productivity of groups based on institution type, gender, academic rank, years of experience, and reputation…

  • Geographic Information Services in the Undergraduate College: Organizational Models and Alternatives

Carol Cady, William H Walters et al.•ARTICLE•Cartographica The International…•2008

Although GIS is well established at most research universities, it has only recently been integrated into the instructional programs of many undergraduate colleges. This article explores three organizational models for implementing GIS in the undergraduate environment: the departmental model (GIS based in a single academic department), the non-departmental model (GIS based in another agency, such as the library or the computer centre), and the “n…

  • Types and patterns of later‐life migration

William H Walters, DW Owen et al.•ARTICLE•Geografiska Annaler Series B…•2000•Cited by: 18•References: 2

This paper refines previous typologies of later‐life mobility by explicitly evaluating the spatial migration patterns and household characteristics of retired American migrants. Migrants' lifecourse attributes (economic status, disability, presence of spouse), large‐scale migration patterns (internal migration) and household characteristics (living arrangements, economic independence, residential independence) are used to identify three types of …

  • Ethnic and Religious Components of the Jewish Income Advantage, 1969 and 1989

    Open Access•Esther Isabelle Wilder, William H Walters•ARTICLE•Sociological Inquiry•1998•Cited by: 6•References: 16

Because Jewish ethnicity and religion do not necessarily coincide, the income advantage associated with Jewish identity can be separated into its ethnic and religious components. We estimate the impact of Jewish ethnicity and religion on household income in 1969 and 1989. In both years, ethnically Jewish households had a considerable income advantage over other non-Hispanic White households. This advantage appears to have persisted even among hou…
