Cognitive and non-cognitive traits and the intergenerational transmission of socioeconomic inequality
Medicare Health Plan Choices of the Elderly: A Choice-With-Screening Model
With the expansion of Medicare, increasing attention has been paid to the behavior of elderly persons in choosing health insurance. This article investigates how the elderly use plan attributes to screen their Medicare health plans to simplify a complicated choice situation. The proposed model extends the conventional random utility models by considering a screening stage. Bayesian estimation is implemented, and the results based on Medicare data…
Private Insurance, Selection, and Health Care Use: A Bayesian Analysis of a Roy-Type Model
Observed differences in medical utilization between the privately insured and uninsured reflect the combined effects of self-selection and insurance incentives (moral hazard). This article provides a Bayesian framework for decomposing the disparity into incentive and selection components. The effect of self-selection in private insurance on the number of doctor visits is estimated using a multiyear sample of the U.S. adult non-Medicare population…
Using Trivariate Copulas to Model Sample Selection and Treatment Effects: Application to Family Health Care Demand
Simultaneous nonlinear econometric models with discrete outcomes are often difficult to implement. This article considers the use of the copula approach for a model with three jointly determined outcomes. It also deals with the discrete case in which outcomes include a mixture of dichotomous choices and discrete count data. We apply this technique to study self-selection and interdependence between health insurance and health care demand among ma…
Modeling Response Bias in Count: A Structural Approach With an Application to the National Crime Victimization Survey Data
This article considers modeling response bias when the response is a count. The authors adopt a “structural approach” by using a generalized negative binomial mixture of Poisson distribution to model misreported counts, assuming that the distribution of the true response follows a negative binomial distribution. The model may be interpreted as a “stopped-sum” model. A simulated maximum likelihood estimator is proposed, and its finite sample perfo…
Regression Analysis of Count Data
Students in both the natural and social sciences often seek regression models to explain the frequency of events, such as visits to a doctor, auto accidents or job hiring. This analysis provides a comprehensive account of models and methods to interpret such data. The authors have conducted research in the field for nearly fifteen years and in this work combine theory and practice to make sophisticated methods of analysis accessible to practition…
Excess Zeros in Count Models for Recreational Trips
This article develops a modeling approach for a count dataset for recreational boating trips that shows a frequency of zero counts significantly higher than that expected for Poisson-distributed data. We consider several parametric and semiparametric mixed and modified Poisson models as alternatives to the Poisson regression. The analysis suggests that the negative binomial hurdles model, which allows for overdispersion and also accommodates the …
Tests of Independence in Parametric Models With Applications and Illustrations
Tests of independence between variables in a wide variety of discrete and continuous bivariate and multivariate regression equations are derived using results from the theory of series expansions of joint distributions in terms of marginal distributions and their related orthonormal polynomials. The tests are conditional moment tests based on covariances between pairs of orthonormal polynomials. Examples include tests of serial independence again…

Some Specification Tests for the Linear Regression Model
A great deal of recent work in econometrics has focused on the development of tests to detect violations of the assumptions of ordinary least squares regression. These tests are referred to collectively as specification tests. This article evaluates some important and computationally convenient specification tests for the normal regression model as applied to cross-sectional data. Because these tests achieve their optimal properties in large samp…
Regression-based tests for overdispersion in the Poisson model
Econometric models based on count data. Comparisons and applications of some estimators and tests
This paper deals with specification, estimation and tests of single equation reduced form type equations in which the dependent variable takes only non‐negative integer values. Beginning with Poisson and compound Poisson models, which involve strong assumptions, a variety of possible stochastic models and their implications are discussed. A number of estimators and their properties are considered in the light of uncertainty about the data generat…
