The Roles of Women's Health and Education in Family and Societal Health
Multi-Dimensional Risk Factor Patterns Associated with Non-Use of Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy among Human Immunodeficiency Virus-Infected Women
Association of Race, Substance Abuse, and Health Insurance Coverage With Use of Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy Among HIV-Infected Women, 2005
Objectives. We examined racial/ethnic disparities in highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) use and whether differences are moderated by substance use or insurance status, using data from the Women's Interagency HIV Study (WIHS). Methods. Logistic regression examined HAART use in a longitudinal cohort of women for whom HAART was clinically indicated in 2005 (N = 1354). Results. Approximately 3 of every 10 eligible women reported not taking …
Latent Markov Model for Analyzing Temporal Configuration for Violence Profiles and Trajectories in a Sample of Batterers
In this article, the authors demonstrate the utility of an extended latent Markov model for analyzing temporal configurations in the behaviors of a sample of 550 domestic violence batterers. Domestic violence research indicates that victims experience a constellation of abusive behaviors rather than a single type of violent outcome. There is also evidence that observed behaviors are highly dynamic, with batterers cycling back and forth between pe…
North Carolina Tobacco Farmers’ Changing Perceptions of Tobacco Control and Tobacco Manufacturers
Purpose: To examine tobacco farmers’ attitudes toward tobacco control, public health, and tobacco manufacturers in order to determine the extent to which rapidly changing economic conditions have influenced North Carolina tobacco farmer attitudes in ways that may provide tobacco control advocates with new opportunities to promote tobacco control policies in tobacco‐dependent US communities. Methods: We used data from a longitudinal sample of Nort…
Gender Bias in Economic Evaluation Methods
Funding of North Carolina Tobacco Control Programs Through the Master Settlement Agreement
Changing political and economic forces in 1 tobacco-dependent state, North Carolina, demonstrate how the interplay between these forces and public health priorities has shaped current allocation of Master Settlement Agreement funds. Allocation patterns demonstrate lawmakers’ changing priorities in response to changes in the economic climate; some of the agreement’s funds targeted to tobacco farmers appear to reflect objectives favored by tobacco …
Long-term costs of intimate partner violence in a sample of female HMO enrollees
When Practices, Promises, Profits, and Policies Outpace Hard Evidence
Currently, there is widespread controversy regarding the risks and benefits of hormone therapy for women over 50. The history of hormone therapy provides an excellent example of how different constituencies with competing objectives can produce health practices and policies of questionable benefit. We examine this history from the perspectives of women who now live longer, expecting higher quality of life throughout their later years, healthcare …
Intimate Partner Violence and Abuse among Active Duty Military Women
In a sample of 616 active duty military women, 30% reported adult lifetime intimate partner violence (IPV), defined as physical and/or sexual assault. The prevalence of IPV during the time of military service was 21.6%. Lifetime prevalence of any abuse, including emotional abuse and/or stalking, was 44.3%. Risk factors for IPV (lifetime and while in the military) from multivariate logistic regression were separated or divorced marital status (odd…
Intimate Partner Violence and Physical Health Consequences
BACKGROUND: Domestic violence results in long-term and immediate health problems. This study compared selected physical health problems of abused and never abused women with similar access to health care. METHODS: A case-control study of enrollees in a multisite metropolitan health maintenance organization sampled 2535 women enrollees aged 21 to 55 years who responded to an invitation to participate; 447 (18%) could not be contacted, 7 (0.3%) wer…
Time-Varying Risk Factors for Reassault Among Batterer Program Participants
Annual and lifetime prevalence of partner abuse in a sample of female HMO enrollees
Effectiveness of pediatric practice consultation on missed opportunities for immunization
Strategic Activity and Financial Performance of U.S. Rural Hospitals
This study examines the effect of 13 strategic management activities on the financial performance of a national sample of 797 U.S. rural hospitals during the period of 1983‐1988. Controlled for environment‐market, geographic‐region, and hospital‐related variables, the results show almost no measurable effect of strategic adoption on rural hospital profitability and liquidity. Where statistically significant relationships existed, they were more o…
