Disparity in Total Hip Replacement Affecting Hispanic Medicare Beneficiaries
OBJECTIVE: To compare the utilization of total hip replacement (THR) between Hispanic persons and non-Hispanic persons in a sample with health insurance. RESEARCH DESIGN: Case-control study using Medicare claims data. PATIENTS: The cases were Medicare beneficiaries from Arizona, Illinois, New Mexico, or Texas who underwent a primary THR. OBJECTIVES. This study was undertaken to examine the patterns of treatment and survival among elderly Americans with hip fracture. METHODS. A 5% national sample of Medicare claims was used to identify patients who sustained hip fractures between 1986 and 1989. In comparing treatment patterns across regions, direct standardization was used to derive age- and race-adjusted percentages. Logistic regression and Cox regression were used to examine sho…

Is aggressive behaviour in preschool more closely related to individual characteristics of the child as assessed at home, to aspects of mother-child interaction, or to the motherchild relationship? Results from studies that compare different methods of data collection may be confounded in many instances because of differences in response rates or sampling frames. Two alternatives to in-person interviewing were designed to overcome these confounding factors. One strategy utilized the telephone with in-person interviewing as a back-up when phone numbers were not available. The other strategy was a drop-off/pick-up, self-administered strategy.…
