Beyond cultural heritage therapy
It is widely accepted that visiting culturally humancentric heritage sites is potentially therapeutic, although how this process unfolds is still relatively under studied. Most studies reviewed see interventions through the lens of Cultural Heritage Therapy or, if human heritage is not foregrounded, ecotherapy. In this paper, these approaches are critiqued for their polarised stance, leading to a suggestion that an interdisciplinary approach coul…
Beyond the Prison Wall
In Ethiopia, the impact of imprisonment on motherhood remains significantly under-researched, despite motherhood being central to Ethiopian cultural identity. This study adopts a descriptive phenomenological approach to explore the lived experiences of nine formerly incarcerated Ethiopian mothers. The findings illuminate their struggles with societal stigma, poverty, and fractured family dynamics, alongside their resilience and commitment to rebu…

The Lived Experience of Motherhood after Prison
Despite the increasing number of women experiencing incarceration internationally, their experiences of motherhood after prison rarely studied. This review aims to explore and synthesize current research on the nature of the lived experience of motherhood after imprisonment. A qualitative synthesis review of English language-based articles published before January 2020 was used. 14 peer-reviewed qualitative studies were identified. The findings i…
How important is integration to the successful ‘roll out’ of specialist hospital discharge schemes for people who are homeless
In 2021, we published research funded by the UK National Institute for Health Research that demonstrated the effectiveness and cost effectiveness of specialist hospital discharge schemes for people who are homeless. A key finding of the research was that areas that had a specialist homeless hospital discharge scheme had fewer delayed discharges and could reduce their emergency readmissions among homeless patients by 14%. This positive outcome att…
The challenge of western-influenced notions of knowledge and research training
In this paper, based on fieldwork experiences in Ethiopia, we have taken an African and Indigenous perspective to highlight and critically reflect on how Western notions of knowledge and research training for social work sometimes fail to engage meaningfully with local realities and disregard cultural and religious practices. This paper argues, from an Ethiopian and African perspective, for culturally appropriate research training. It proposes th…
The war within
This article demonstrates how children’s emotional experiences in the context of child protection services (CPS) impact their choices in everyday lives. It draws on a qualitative study examining the lived experiences of children from Pakistani backgrounds with Norwegian CPS. The data analysis shows that children’s emotions are social and relational, interacting with their broader politico-cultural environment, as they are both shaped and being sh…

Dementia as Zeitgeist
The global impact of dementia on social, political, economic, and health systems is of contemporary concern. As the world's population ages, differentially, across countries in the Global North and Global South, dementia research and care have become embedded in primary mandates for action within the agendas of governments and health research and service organisations. Using notions of social problem construction and sociologies of legitimacy, th…
Children’s experiences with Child Protection Services
Research shows that young adults, previously in contact with Child Protection Services (CPS) often have lower overall wellbeing when compared to their peers in the general population. To redress this balance and fulfil children’s right to receive good quality and child-centred services, the child’s lived experience of the CPS processes and interventions must be better understood. There is research with children about specific aspects of CPS, such…
Historic Landscapes and Mental Well-Being
Locating oneself in the past to influence the present
Mental health and the criminal justice system
Historically there has been a significant under-recognition of mental health problems among people in the criminal justice system, and little research exploring the issues encountered by those with mental health problems who come into contact with the criminal justice system. Recent policy has highlighted the importance of early identification of mental health needs in criminal cases, and the role of diversion of offenders into appropriate mental…
