The impact of financial incentives on HIV incidence among adolescent girls and young women in Eswatini
Introduction Incentives conditional on school attendance or on remaining free of sexually transmitted infections have produced mixed results in reducing HIV incidence. Methods HIV-negative adolescent girls and young women aged 15–22%–50% of whom were out of school—were recruited from 293 clusters in Eswatini from urban (30%) and rural areas (70%). Financial incentives conditional on education attendance were randomly allocated at the cluster leve…
Individual and partnership characteristics associated with consistent condom use in a cohort of cisgender men who have sex with men and transgender women in Nigeria
These findings suggest that individuals in relationships where partners were more open and encouraged safer sex were more likely to consistently use condoms. HIV prevention programs should consider leveraging communication to sexual partners to encourage condom use as this may support condom use with other sexual partners. Given sustained and growing HIV and STI epidemics among MSM and TGW, even with pre-exposure prophylaxis scale-up, it is cruci…

Associations Between Economic Factors and Condom Use Behavior Among Female Sex Workers in Dakar and Mbour, Senegal
The relationship between depression and sexual health service utilization among men who have sex with men (MSM) in Côte d'Ivoire, West Africa
BACKGROUND: In Cote D'Ivoire, there has been limited coverage of evidence-based sexual health services specifically supporting men who have sex with men (MSM). To date, there has been limited study of the determinants of engagement in these services including multiple intersecting stigmas and depression. METHODS: 1301 MSM aged 18 years and older, were recruited using respondent-driven sampling in Abidjan, Yamoussoukro, Gagnoa and Bouake, Cote d'I…
Prevalence and factors associated to disclosure of same-sex practices to family members and health care workers among men who have sex with men in Togo
Disclosure of same-sex practices is associated with improved access to health services and better health outcomes. Our aim was to estimate the prevalence of same-sex practice disclosure to family members and health care workers (HCW) in two cities in Togo. 683 MSM ≥18 years of age were surveyed using respondent driven sampling (RDS) for a cross-sectional survey using a structured questionnaire in Lomé (354 (51.8%)) and Kara (n = 329 (48.2%)). Med…
Lifetime experiences of gender-based violence, depression and condom use among female sex workers in Cameroon
Background: In general populations, consistent data highlight the relationships among violence, HIV risk behavior and depression; however, these patterns are not well understood among female sex workers (FSWs). We examined the relationship between FSWs’ experiences with sexual violence and consistent condom use as a key HIV risk behavior and explored mental health as a potential mediator. Methods: In total, 2,165 FSWs were recruited via responden…
Characterising the relationship between migration and stigma affecting healthcare engagement among female sex workers in Lomé, Togo
Migration in West Africa is common and complicates the sustained delivery of comprehensive HIV care programmes for those with specific vulnerabilities to HIV, including female sex workers (FSW). This study evaluated whether migration potentiates the burden of stigma affecting FSW in Lomé, Togo. Respondent driven sampling identified 354 FSW who completed HIV testing and a questionnaire. Multivariable logistic regression was used to identify factor…
Evaluating the vertical HIV transmission risks among South African female sex workers; have we forgotten PMTCT in their HIV programming
These findings show significant gaps in engagement in the PMTCT cascades for FSW, evidenced by sub-optimal uptake of HIV prevention and treatment in the peri/post-natal periods and insufficient prevention of unintended pregnancies among FSW living with HIV. These gaps result in elevated risks for vertical transmission among FSW and the need for PMTCT services within FSW programs
Use and Acceptability of HIV Self-Testing Among First-Time Testers at Risk for HIV in Senegal
HIV Self-Testing (HIVST) aims to increase HIV testing coverage and can facilitate reaching the UNAIDS 90-90-90 targets. In Senegal, key populations bear a disproportionate burden of HIV and report limited uptake of HIV testing given pervasive stigma and criminalization. In these contexts, HIVST may represent a complementary approach to reach populations reporting barriers to engagement with existing and routine HIV testing services. In this study…
Characterizing Multi-level Determinants of HIV Prevalence Among Female Sex Workers in Maseru and Maputsoe, Lesotho
Characterizing the Patterns of HIV Disclosure to Clients Among South African Female Sex Workers in Port Elizabeth
Using a social ecological framework to characterize the correlates of HIV among men who have sex with men in Lomé, Togo
In the mixed and concentrated HIV epidemics of West Africa, the relative disproportionate burden of HIV among men who have sex with men (MSM) compared to other reproductive-age men is higher than that observed in Southern and Eastern Africa. Our aim is to describe the correlates of HIV infection among MSM living in Lomé, Togo, using the Modified Social Ecological Model (MSEM). A total of 354 MSM ≥18 years of age were recruited using respondent dr…
Social cohesion, social participation and HIV testing among men who have sex with men in Swaziland
Social cohesion and social participation are social factors that may help reduce HIV risks and optimize health-seeking behaviors. We examined the association between these factors and HIV testing in the last 12 months among men who have sex with men (MSM) in Swaziland using a cross-sectional survey conducted with 326 men, 18 years of age or older reporting having sex with another man in the last 12 months. Social capital analyses included measure…
Suicidal ideation among MSM in three West African countries
BACKGROUND: Suicidal ideation is understudied among men who have sex with men (MSM) across Sub-Saharan Africa. AIMS: This study aimed to explore social capital and sexual behavior stigma associated with suicidal ideation among MSM in the West African nations of The Gambia, Burkina Faso and Togo. METHODS: Participants were recruited using respondent-driven sampling and snowball sampling across multiple cities (n = 1555) from July 2011 to August 20…

Correlates of prior HIV testing among men who have sex with men in Cameroon
Supporting regular HIV testing and linkage to care is important in a context of high HIV prevalence and limited use of condoms and condom-compatible lubricants. Building the capacity of MSM organizations and mainstream health services to deliver affordable, integrated, confidential, and MSM-sensitive HIV testing may assist in effectively engaging more MSM in the HIV treatment cascade. Giving specific attention to MSM who are younger, of lower soc…
Evolving Understanding of the Epidemiology of HIV and Prevention Needs among Men Who Have Sex with Men in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia
Sexual stigma and discrimination as barriers to seeking appropriate healthcare among men who have sex with men in Swaziland
INTRODUCTION: Same-sex practices and orientation are both stigmatized and criminalized in many countries across sub-Saharan Africa. This study aimed to assess the relationship of fear of seeking healthcare and disclosure of same-sex practices among a sample of men who have sex with men (MSM) in Swaziland with demographic, socio-economic and behavioural determinants. METHODS: Three hundred and twenty-three men who reported having had anal sex with…
Social Class and Inequalities in Early Cognitive Scores
Research emphasising the importance of parenting behaviours and aspirations for child outcomes has been seized on by policymakers to suggest the responsibility of the worst off themselves for low levels of social mobility. This article provides a critique of the way in which research evidence has been used to support the dominant policy discourse in this area, as well as an empirical analysis. We use the Millennium Cohort Study to interrogate the…
Health and survival of young children in southern Tanzania
Relatively short distances to health facilities, high antenatal and vaccine coverage show that peripheral health facilities have huge potential to make a difference to health and survival at household level in rural Tanzania, even with current human resources
