    Hyekyun Rhee, Diane Holditch-Davis et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•2005

  • In-Home Intervention for Depressive Symptoms With Low-Income Mothers of Infants and Toddlers in the United States

Linda Beeber, Linda S Beeber et al.•ARTICLE•Health Care For Women International•2004

Depressive symptoms in low-income mothers negatively affect infant-toddler development. This pilot study tested a short-term, home-based depressive symptom intervention with 16 African American and White, Non-Hispanic mothers in Early Head Start (EHS) programs who were randomly assigned to intervention and usual care/waiting list conditions. Mothers met in their homes with master's-prepared psychiatric mental health nurses who worked with them to…

  • Early Interactions Between Mothers and Their Medically Fragile Infants

    Diane Holditch-Davis, Diane Holditch‐davi et al.•ARTICLE•Applied Developmental Science•1999

The purpose of this study was to examine the interactions of 56 medically fragile infants and their mothers and to determine the influence of infant age, neurological status, maternal education, ethnicity, and observation location on these interactions. The interactions were observed for about 1 hr every 2 months while in the hospital, 1 month after hospital discharge, and at 6 months corrected age. The age of the infants had the greatest effect …

  • Beyond couvade

Diane Holditch‐davi, Diane Holditch‐Davis et al.•ARTICLE•Health Care For Women International•1994

Thirty‐six couples with a history of infertility reported their physical, positive emotional, and negative emotional symptoms during pregnancy. The women experienced more physical symptoms than did the men. Both the men and women experienced second‐trimester decreases in negative emotional symptoms and third‐trimester increases in negative emotional symptoms. The women's physical symptoms also showed a second‐trimester dip. Each symptom type was …

  • Somewhere Out There

Open Access•Margarete Sandelowski, Betty Glenn Harris et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Contemporary Ethnography•1993•Cited by: 2•References: 17

This article describes the process of parental claiming expressed in multiple interviews conducted with 35 infertile couples waiting to adopt a child. Parental claiming is the special kind of emotional and intellectual work that adopting couples do prior to placement to make someone else's child "somewhere out there" their own. It involves creating an object to claim, undermining the primacy of blood ties, and transforming someone else's child in…

  • Amniocentesis in the context of infertility

Margarete Sandelowski, Betty Glenn Harris et al.•ARTICLE•Health Care For Women International•1991

The encounter with amniocentesis compels infertile couples to experience again the mix of adversity, uncertainty, and hope characterizing both infertility and prenatal testing. Findings from open-ended interviews of 38 couples, 25 infertile and 13 fertile, participating in an ongoing longitudinal field study of infertile childbearing and adopting couples suggest that amniocentesis both reprises elements of the infertility experience and interrupt…

This paper addresses the paradoxes of infertility and the explanatory models infertile couples construct to resolve them. The analysis is based on multiple interviews with 53 infertile couples and a comparison group of 10 couples with no fertility impairments in the process of achieving parenthood through pregnancy and adoption, and single interviews with three infertile couples one to two years after having their last child. Couples defined infe…
