Emerging within the tradition of Critical Race Theory,Stanford law professor Ian Haney Lopez's new book systematically evaluates how the law creates and maintains races. He shows how the term "white person"was legally defined by U.S. state and federal courts by identifying who was "non-White,"using a questionable mixture of science and common knowledge. He explores the processes by which legal institutions andbpracticesbfabricaterbace, highlighting…

  • White fantasies, black bodies

    Wayne Martin Mellinger, Rodney Beaulieu•ARTICLE•Visual Anthropology•1997•Cited by: 1•References: 8

    Wayne Martin Mellinger•ARTICLE•Visual Sociology•1992•Cited by: 12•References: 10

This paper is a study of American postcards which represent African Americans as “happy Darkeys.” 1 suggest that the oppressive visual metaphor of other‐as‐child positioned black subjects in a racist regime of representation which constructed subjectivities for those depicted and identities for their viewers. I then describe the distinguishing characteristics of these images, analyze the meanings they convey, and the social uses that they serve

    Open Access•Wayne Martin Mellinger•ARTICLE•Symbolic Interaction•1992•Cited by: 3•References: 11

This paper examines visual representations of African Americans on postcards from 1893 to World War I. Caricatures of African Americans found on these popular cultural artifacts frequently employ the visual metaphor of other-as-beast. To map the discursive features of this form of racist ideology, attention is paid to the icono-graphic and linguistic strategies employed to depict African Americans as physically, intellectually, and temperamentall…
