  • Independent Music after Metallica v. Napster, Inc

    Lukas Szrot•ARTICLE•Fast Capitalism•2026

In this brief paper, I note the ways in which being a musician has changed in the aftermath of the digital downloading and file-sharing developed by Napster pioneer Shawn Fanning, through the lens of the music streaming simulacrum—my term for what has unfolded since. I contrast the present environment with the potential that emerged with this technology. I theorize the music streaming simulacrum as opaque, flat, and hegemonic—a parody of both ind…

  • Hamlet's Father

    Lukas Szrot•ARTICLE•Fast Capitalism•2026

In his 1949 work Hamlet's Ghost, Richard Flatter wrote of the ghost of Hamlet's father that the play ultimately belongs to him, to the ghost. Modernity, like the play, belongs to its ghosts, to its dead fathers haunting their wayward sons, the metaphysical specters it imperfectly endeavors to exorcise. Critical theory has often focused on the possibility, and the contours, of a utopia populated by liberatory spirit and liberated persons. Less wel…

  • Risk, Return to Industry, and the Future of Democracy

    Lukas Szrot•ARTICLE•Fast Capitalism•2026

Reflecting on 2020, I consider the possibility of the collapse of the United States, as well as the ways in which it has fallen short of representative and democratic promise. I argue that the spread of conspiratorial reason is symptomatic of the mistrust that has arisen from these failures. Drawing on naturalist, critical theory, and sociology of knowledge accounts of conspiratorial reason, I argue that such thinking is interest-bound, weaponizi…

  • Sex Lives of the Chaste

    Open Access•Lukas Szrot•ARTICLE•Symbolic Interaction•2026

Sexuality and the Catholic Priesthood: The “Chaste” Caste By Marco Marzano (Routledge, 2025). In the words of one Father Dario (pseudonyms are of course used throughout), “I love Christ deeply, I really love being a priest, looking after people's problems, helping them to improve their lives and I adore theological debate. But like all human beings I want to be loved” (p. 79). I am reminded of Robert K. Merton's (1976) Sociological Ambivalence, w…

  • From Stewardship to Creation Spirituality

Lukas Szrot•ARTICLE•Journal for the Study of Religion…•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 9

The relationship between the Catholic Church and the world’s poor is complicated by the link between concern for the earth and concern for the poor. To historically situate this relationship, in this article I examine thirty papal encyclical letters and three other salient documents issued by six Popes, spanning a period between publication of Rachel Carson’s 1962 Silent Spring (a common starting-point for modern environmentalism) and Pope Franci…
