  • The War Within Religion

    Open Access•Netta Barak-Corren•ARTICLE•The American Journal of…•2023

In the United States, Canada, Israel, Australia, and many parts of Europe, conflicts between religious liberty and gender equality (including LGBTQ equality) are understood and analyzed as “culture wars.” This view has shaped the sociolegal understanding of the conflict—how the legal community makes sense of cases and interprets their social significance—and has narrowed the perceived scope of legal solutions to religion–equality conflicts to zer…

  • Majority Nationalism Laws and the Equal Citizenship of Minorities

    Open Access•Netta Barak-Corren, Netta Barak‐corren et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Legal Studies•2022

Western societies are increasingly enacting majority nationalism laws to strengthen majority culture. We propose that these laws may alter attitudes about minorities’ equal citizenship with varied impact on majorities and minorities. To explore this issue, we examine the impact of Israel’s recently enacted Nation Law on the Jewish majority and the Arab minority. This article examines the behavioral effect of this decision in an experiment that measured discrimination toward same-sex couples from 1,155 wedding businesses shortly before and after Masterpiece. I find that Masterpiece significantly reduced the willingness to…

  • Beyond Dissent and Compliance

Netta Barak-Corren, Netta Barak‐corren•ARTICLE•Oxford Journal of Law and Religion•2017

Throughout history and across many societies, people have been facing conflicts between faith and the law. This article exposes and defines central dynamics of these conflicts by empirically investigating how educational leaders in religious communities tackle, reduce, and resolve conflicts with the law. Three main dynamics emerge: first, religious leaders frequently seek to harmonize law and religion by redefining the conflict around different t…

  • False Negotiations

    Open Access•Edy Glozman, Netta Barak-Corren et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Conflict Resolution•2015•Cited by: 4•References: 25

The usual purpose of negotiations is to explore options and reach an agreement, if possible. We investigated a notable exception to this generalization, where a party negotiates without any intention of reaching an agreement. False negotiation occurs when a party gains more by stalling the negotiations until an external change takes place that improves its position considerably. While false negotiators aim to avoid agreement within the current fr…
