Drumming as Embodied and Mindful Performance
In this article, I explore some questions concerning the aesthetics of musical performance. I approach this topic from a perspective influenced by some theoretical works of Bill Bruford, Shaun Gallagher, and Richard Shusterman, and choose the musical practice of drumming as a promising case to exemplify certain concepts and themes. Following various insights inspired, in particular, by Bruford and Gallagher, I argue for a conception of drumming a…
Foucault’s Aesthetics of Existence and Shusterman’s Somaesthetics
Bringing together Michel Foucault’s aesthetics of existence and Richard Shusterman’s somaesthetics, this volume provides a critical comparison of two of the most influential philosophical theories of the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Introduced by a comprehensive overview of both concepts by editors Stefano Marino and Valentina Antoniol, the ensuing chapters interrogate the affinities and variances between Foucault’s and Shusterman’s philos…
Senso estetico e valore sociale del punk. Appunti per una riconsiderazione di un fenomeno prismatico
In the present article, articulated in two sections, we take into examination the aesthetics of popular music, with a particular attention to the punk subculture and the relation between its aesthetic value and its socio-political relevance. In the first section of our contribution we explain why, in our view, it is important that contemporary aesthetics also investigates, among other fields and phenomena, the popular arts, including popular musi…
Overcoming “the Penetration Model”
In the present contribution, dealing with the intellectual legacy of Michel Foucault forty years after his death, I offer an analysis of some possible relations between certain aspects of Foucault’s project of a history of sexuality, Richard Shusterman’s somaesthetic investigation of the experience of lovemaking, and some recent attempts to critically rethink sexuality in the context of feminist scholarship. My approach towards Foucault’s thinkin…
Introduction
Michel Foucault was undoubtedly one of the most important and influential philosophers and intellectuals of the twentieth century. It is not surprising that in 2024, on the fortieth anniversary of Foucault’s death, an abundance of tributes paid to the thought and work of this author has emerged (consider, for example, the “World Congress: Foucault 40 Years After”). Among these, the tribute of the journal Foucault Studies, one of the main internat…
Varieties of the Lifeworld
In this contribution we first sketch an outline of the concept of lifeworld ( Lebenswelt ), to introduce the readers to the guest-edited collection of essays Varieties of the Lifeworld: Phenomenology and Aesthetic Experience , special issue of the “Continental Philosophy Review.” We trace back the origin of the concept of lifeworld to Husserl’s late phenomenology, although also explaining (on the basis of the careful historical-conceptual reconst…
Sexuality and/as Art, Power, and Reconciliation
In this article I investigate Richard Shusterman's philosophical inquiry into sexuality in his recent book "Ars Erotica: Sex and Somaesthetics in the Classical Arts of Love". I first offer a reconstruction and interpretation of Shusterman's philosophical path, from pragmatist aesthetics to somaesthetics. Then, I explain how and why somaesthetics arrived at including sexuality among its topics, on the basis of its complex and sophisticated concept…
Critica della cultura e industria culturale
In this article I investigate the concept of cultural criticism in the tradition of Frankfurt School’s critical theory of society. In particular, I focus on Adorno’s understanding of the method and aims of cultural criticism in constant relation to a critical analysis of the contradictions of contemporary society, and I pay a special attention to the products of the so-called culture industry. Adorno’s critical analysis of contemporary culture is…
Richard Shusterman (with Yann Toma), The Adventures of the Man in Gold / Les aventures de l’Homme en Or (Bilingual Edition
The Adventures of the Man in Gold / Les aventures de l’Homme en Or is an interesting, original and, to some extent, also “strange” or “bizarre” book by the American philosopher Richard Shusterman. The book is also enriched by ma
Verità, etica e religione in Richard Rorty
The Role of Tragedy and the Tragic in Gadamer's Aesthetics and Hermeneutics
This article discusses Hans-Georg Gadamer’s conception of tragedy and the tragic. We move from the basic presuppositions: (1) that the question concerning tragedy and the tragic undoubtedly belongs to the fundamental questions that have characterized the whole history of Western thought; (2) that Gadamer surely belongs to the main representatives of twentieth-century continental thought and his hermeneutical aesthetics undoubtedly represents, in …
Gadamer on Heidegger
This paper takes up the issue of Gadamer’s appropriation of Heidegger’s later philosophy, and it does so in terms of a critical examination of those aspects of Heidegger’s being-historical perspective that Gadamer seems to question, and sometimes explicitly reject. I argue that Gadamer’s criticism of the later Heidegger is based on three basic reasons: a partial refusal of the latter’s interpretations of Greek philosophy (especially Plato); a str…
The Provision of Psychiatric Care in Southern Italy. Results From the 'Psychiatry in Southern Italy's Services' (De Pisis) Survey
OBJECTIVE: To describe structural features, attenders' characteristics and intervention habits in a large sample of Community Mental Health Departments (CMHDs) in Southern Italy. DESIGN AND SETTING: 1) Survey of resources and organization features of collaborating CMHDs; 2) Unreplicated registration of all attenders and of therapeutic interventions during an index week. RESULTS: A self-selected sample of 47 CMHDs in Southern Italy recruited 3845 …
Ill-Health and Social Predictors of Psychotropic Drug Prescription in General Practice
Prescriptions of psychotropic drugs among 505 consecutive attenders on a single day at 32 general practices were recorded. For 404 of them the results of a screening for psychiatric morbidity conducted by means of the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ) were available. Among attenders recognised as psychiatric cases by their general practitioners the presence of concurrent somatic problems exerted a significant effect in reducing the relative odds…
