The Debate About Taxing the Wealthy
In light of major societal challenges, the political debate on various forms of wealth taxation, or the ‘Tax the Rich’ strategy, has recently gained momentum in Germany. This article examines the arguments for and against taxing the wealthy, drawing on statistical data and some of the most significant scientific studies on current economic inequality and its history. In particular, it looks at the kinds of reasons used in the current debate. It i…
Schockierende Ungleichheit
Gassendi, Pierre
The Logical Structure of Aristoxenus’s Theory of Music
It has often been noted that Aristoxenus applied Aristotle’s philosophy of science to his theory of music, as Harmonics I-II presents principles and Harmonics III proofs of some theorems. This reading is rather superficial, however, since it relies on a vague notion of logic. In this paper the author shows: (i) that already in Harmonics I-II, Aristoxenus proves a number of theorems; (ii) that almost all proofs can be syllogistically reconstructed…

On the Concept of Basic Social Norms
In sociology, social philosophy, social ontology, and classical choice theory the notion of a social norm is usually introduced by using a rich normative, semantic, and social vocabulary, while the notions that evolutionary game theory proceeds from seem too poor to elucidate the idea of social norms. In this paper, I suggest to define a notion of social norms that is as basic as possible, in the sense that it relies only on notions like affects,…
Habermas und die Methodologie kritischer Theorien
Hybrid Theories of Normativity
What is the source of ethical normativity? It is often thought that the ancient world-view provides an easier answer to this question than the modern scientific picture of the world. The traditional diagnosis is that the ancients conceived of the universe as being a teleological structure. The real is supposed to be in some sense normative and human life has a purpose which depends on the teleology exhibited by the universe as a whole. This is su…
Foucault and Classical Antiquity
This 2005 book is a critical examination of Michel Foucault's relation to ancient Greek thought, in particular his famous analysis of Greek history of sexuality. Wolfgang Detel offers an understanding of Foucault's theories of power and knowledge based on modern analytical theories of science and concepts of power. He offers a complex reading of the texts which Foucault discusses, covering topics such as Aristotle's ethics and theory of sex, Hipp…
Wissensideale und Wissenskulturen in der Frühen Neuzeit
Was verstand man unter Wissen im 17. Jahrhundert?
Proceeding from a set of conditions that an adequate notion of a non-mathematical function should satisfy, we examine some of the most influential of these notions, including Cummins-functions, to conclude that the teleosemantic notion of a non-mathematical proper function, suggested originally by Ruth Millikan, best satisfies the proposed conditions. In particular, this notion allows us to talk consistently about organisms having some functions …
In the following attempt at a further clarification of the methodological aspects of Marxian theory construction it is demonstrated that central arguments in the first part of the Kapital, especially the description of the development from simple to capitalist commodity production, can be analysed as functional explanations in the modern logical sense. At the same time it becomes clear that some questionable conclusions which have been arrived at…
