  • Foreign investment in Swedish industry on the eve of World War One

Open Access•Viktor Persarvet, Lars Karlsson et al.•ARTICLE•Scandinavian Economic History…•2025

During the half-century before World War One (WWI), Sweden was one of the fastest-growing economies in the world, but also one of the most indebted. While the role of foreign capital for public investments during this period is emphasised in previous research, its importance for the funding of Swedish industry is commonly de-emphasised. Open Access•Lars Karlsson, L J E Karlsson et al.•ARTICLE•The Economic History Review•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 40

This article examines the impact of war on trade between 1830 and 1913, that is, during the so-called first wave of globalization. However, little research has been conducted on the actual impact of wars on international trade during this …

Existing historiography has often downplayed the importance of such states in world trade, during armed conflicts, and as important agents in the expanding trade and global connections of the last 250 years. The country studies demonstrate that thes…

  • Neutral trade in time of war: The case of Sweden, 1838–1960

    Open Access•Peter Hedberg, L J E Karlsson•ARTICLE•International Journal of Maritime…•2015•Cited by: 2

It is an established view that war aggravates economic growth due to the direct costs of war, and to the indirect costs incurred from naval warfare and economic blockades. In this article, however, we suggest that non-belligerent countries with access to open trade channels could maintain or expand their trade, even when world trade had declined. As a result, in addition to the advantages of evading the costs of war, non-belligerent countries may…
