  • Post-traumatic growth following the death of a parent from homicide

    Open Access•Rachel Wilson, Robert Balfour et al.•ARTICLE•Death Studies•2025•References: 5

Although there is considerable research into the impact of homicide on surviving family members, research is limited on subjective experiences of those who lost a parent due to homicide during childhood. Through interpretative phenomenological analysis, we conducted and analyzed in-depth semi-structured interviews, to explore lived experiences and perspectives of post-traumatic growth with adults who lost a parent due to homicide as a child. We d…

  • The Experience of Partner Relationships for Male Survivors of Childhood Sexual Abuse

Open Access•Chloe Weetman, Gundi Kiemle et al.•ARTICLE•Trauma Violence & Abuse•2022

Research has documented wide-ranging psychological impacts of childhood sexual abuse (CSA) for male survivors, but their experience of relationships is understudied. This qualitative review aimed to synthesize the qualitative literature concerning the experience of partner relationships for male CSA survivors. Electronic searches were conducted across PsycINFO, CINAHL, and PubMed, complemented by hand searches of references. Searches were limited…

  • Freshlyground and the possibilities of new identities in post-apartheid South Africa

Open Access•Robert Balfour, Robert Giterman•ARTICLE•The Journal for Transdisciplinary…•2012

Instead, and particularly within the humanities, it has been claimed that the study of canonised art forms (Viljoen & Van Der Merwe, 2004) may enable the student to …

  • Home as Postcolonial Trope in the Fiction of V.S. Naipaul

    Open Access•Robert Balfour, Robert J Balfour•ARTICLE•Journal of Literary Studies•2010

JanMohamed (1992), in his work on the postcolonial literature of migrants, argues that their "positionality [as] specular border intellectuals" is not merely the combination of initial dislocation, together with a Western education that rules out the possibility of "gregarious acceptance" of any new home culture, but that "homelessness cannot be achieved without multiple border crossings or without a constant, keen awareness of the politics of bo…

  • Between the Lines

    Robert Balfour, Robert J Balfour•ARTICLE•Gender and Education•2003

The article explores the interface between literature, gender, culture and language within an educational context. It examines the responses of Zulu boys and girls to the introduction of a new curriculum that integrated language and literary study in a rural school in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Specifically, it shows how reading can lead to a more complex and critical notion of how gender portends differential access to power
