The Jewish Body in Polish Modernist Prose, 1918–1939, and the Nineteenth-Century Literary Tradition
Interwar Polish modernist prose employed two strategies in its response to traditional images of the Jewish body. The second saw these literary conventions and images as a cultural resource which needed to be deconstructed. These two strategies estab…
Longing for Home
This article discusses the significance and enduring presence of nostalgic narrations in works by Polish-Jewish authors that are often accompanied by motifs of anti-nostalgia. They derive from complex relations with spaces categorized as familiar and alien, close and remote, as well as complex, ambivalent experiences of bonds, distance, and loss. The intersection of nostalgia and anti-nostalgia brings together and intertwines Polish and Jewish tr…

The September Victory
The article analyzes counterfactual historical scenarios developed in the works of Ziemowit Szczerek. In his prose (journalism, essays, documentaries, novels), the writer reflects on the possible history of the Second Polish Republic after its victory over the Germans in the September campaign of 1939. In a narrative game in which he confronts, on the one hand, interwar geopolitical projects, modernization programs, colonial plans, artistic utopi…

Dochodzący do głosu w wielu obszarach współczesnej humanistyki multilingual turn stanowi wyzwanie wobec monolingwalnych narodowych ideologii językowych.
Contact and Conflict
The article suggests using the category of the contact zone adopted from postcolonial studies in research on borderland, which - in turn - allows researchers to describe the phenomenon of the frontier. According to Pratt, contact zone may be understood as the space of cooperation and competition, coexistence and antagonism, contact and conflict of groups. The aim of the article is to analyse the representations of borderland in Polish-Jewish pros…
