Open Access•Katie Barclay, Elaine Chalus et al.•BOOK•Routledge History of Loneliness•2022

The Routledge History of Loneliness takes a multidisciplinary approach to the history of a modern emotion, exploring its form and development across cultures from the seventeenth century to the present. Between 1815 and 1860, Nice became one of Europe's leading health and leisure resorts, annually hosting an international wintering population of thousands. During a period marked by the rise of the nation-state and national sentiment, Nice was celebrated as ‘une ville cosmopolite’. This article suggests that while geographic, historic and economic factors provided preconditions for cosmopolitanism, Nice's emergence as a peculiarly cosmopolitan to…

As one of the most memorable campaigners for the New Interest whigs in the O xfordshire election of 1754, Lady S usan K eck inevitably became the subject of press ridicule and criticism. Undaunted and irrepressible, she not only continued to campaign, but also turned the criticism back on the Old Interest, effectively neutralising it. This detailed examination of Lady S usan's electioneering illustrates the possibilities for electoral involvement…

  • Ladies are often very good scaffoldings’

    Open Access•Elaine Chalus•ARTICLE•Parliamentary History•2009•Cited by: 1

The age of Anne saw unprecedented politicisation of society, the expansion of patronage and the election of ten parliaments between 1695 and 1715. If, as has been argued for the second half of the 18th century, such factors facilitated women's political participation, then the prerequisites for women's political involvement, at least at the level of the political elite, existed in the age of Anne. Yet we still know surprisingly little about the s…

    Elaine Chalus•ARTICLE•The English Historical Review•2009

By the last quarter of the nineteenth century, the mobile, ogling, flirtatious and occasionally riotous audience of the Georgian opera (and, arguably, the Georgian theatre) was no more. Its late Victorian counterpart was much quieter, more static, more decorous, and more likely to treat productions respectfully, as fixed works of art. For the Georgian élite, according to Jennifer Hall-Witt, the Italian opera at the King's Theatre, Haymarket, had …

  • Elite Women, Social Politics, and the Political World of Late Eighteenth-Century England

    Open Access•Elaine Chalus•ARTICLE•The Historical Journal•2000•Cited by: 5

Political historians have recognized that politics and high society interacted in eighteenth-century England; and most would also recognize the presence of elite women in the social world of politicians. These assumptions have not, however, been subjected to much scrutiny. This article takes the social aspects of politics seriously and aims to provide an introduction to social politics – the management of people and social situations for politica…
