Phanagorian synagogue (preliminary report)
During the 2023 field season in Phanagoria, a building of synagogue destroyed by fire was uncovered. It was located on a lower plateau in the central part of the city. The prayer house size is approximately 21 × 6.5 m. It consisted of two rooms, the eastern chamber being the main one. A special place is supposedly identified here for the ark holding the Torah. Opposite it, there were presumably wooden benches on which members of the community sat…
The Cimmerian Bosporus in the 5th Century BC (an Old Persian Inscription from Phanagoria)
This article is a historical commentary on the Old Persian inscription found at Phanagoria (the Taman peninsula, Russia) in 2016. One can think of four possibilities how the document appeared on the northern coast of the Black Sea: the shipping of the inscription or its fragment to Phanagoria together with other stones as ballast, the European Scythian campaign of Darius I , the expedition of Ariaramnes against the Scythians, and the erection of …
A Hoard of 3rd-4th Centuries AD Bosporan Staters from Phanagoria (2011)
The paper is a preliminary publication of a large hoard of Bosporan staters found in Phanagoria’s Eastern necropolis in 2011. It contains 3695 coins struck in the 3rd-4th centuries AD under Ininthimaios, Rhescuporis V , Pharsanzes, Sauromates IV , Teiranes and Thothorses, as well as barbarian imitations of latter staters . The Phanagorian hoard is evidence on the historical background of the epoch and sheds new light on the economy, currency and …
An Old Persian Inscription from Phanagoria
This article is a publication of the fragmentary Old Persian inscription from the ancient Greek city of Phanagoria (the Taman Peninsula, Russia). The inscription was found in a private house built over the ruins of the city’s fortifications, which perished in a fire in the late first or the early second quarter of the 5th century BC . The fragment of the stele bears six partially preserved lines of the text. The signs at the beginning and the end…
The Rebellion in Phanagoria in 63 BC (New Numismatic Evidence)
The authors publish the coins found in excavations at Phanagoria in 2007-2008, conducted by the Taman Archeological Mission of the Institute of Archaeology, Russian Academy of Sciences. This unique numismatic material allows the authors to clarify a number of important events in the history of the Bosporan Kingdom under Mithradates VI Eupator. The most significant finds of the two archaeological seasons are a so-called “hoard” and two purses cont…
