  • Breast and colorectal cancer screening and staging diagnosis among people with and without HIV

Open Access•Meagan King, Nhu Nguyen et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•2026

Background: Older people with HIV (PWH) are increasingly developing cancers commonly seen among people without HIV (PWOH). Few studies have simultaneously evaluated both cancer screening utilization and stage at diagnosis. We compared breast and colorectal cancer screening utilization and staging at diagnosis between PWH and PWOH.Methods: Using 2010–2019 SEER-Medicare linkage data, we identified adults aged ≥51 years with breast or colorectal can…

  • Designing Cluster Randomized Trials

    Kendra Davis‐Plourde, Kendra Davis-Plourde et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•2026•References: 38

BACKGROUND: An important consideration in the design stage of randomized controlled trials is whether individuals within each site should or can be randomized to study arms (an individually randomized controlled trial) or whether entire sites should be randomized (a cluster randomized trial) where the clusters are sites. Recently, cluster randomized trials have grown in popularity; however, investigators have expressed a need for guidelines relat…

  • Is research from government agencies more favored by policymakers? Empirical evidence from a scientometric analysis

  • Determinants of Caregiving Subgroups for Mexican American Caregivers Assisting Older Adults at Home and Their Influence on Perceived Stress

Open Access•Karen E Schlag, Xiaoying Yu et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2025

Patterns of family caregiving of older adults have been identified based on aspects such as care-related tasks and intensity and are associated with caregiver well-being. A gap remains, however, in understanding how individual-, relational-, and cultural-level factors concurrently inform caregiving groups within multicultural families. In this study, we identified caregiving patterns among Mexican American individuals aiding older adults by drawi…

  • Elder abuse-related rib fractures

Open Access•Zhilu Zhou, Peipei Zhuo et al.•ARTICLE•Forensic Sciences Research•2025•References: 16

Trauma in victims of abuse often exists in various ways, and the characters usually manifest as non-fatal injuries, repetitive occurrence, and the injured parts are relatively hidden. Forensic experts are optimally positioned to raise suspicion for abuse when comprehensively considering a forensic investigation, reviewing imaging, and other multiple factors of geriatric injury victims. However, few experts received formal or informal training in …

  • In the wake of a crisis

Open Access•Mónica Hernández, Rebeca Wong et al.•ARTICLE•SSM - Population Health•2023

This study drew from nationally representative data to elucidate the disparate health and financial impacts of a crisis on Medicare beneficiaries who, despite health insurance coverage, displayed variability in foregone medication patterns. Our findings suggest that the onset of housing insecurity is most closely linked with unexpected acute economic shocks leading households with little time to adapt and forcing trade-offs in their prescription …

  • Guidelines for Designing and Evaluating Feasibility Pilot Studies

    E Brown, Jeanne A Teresi et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•2022•References: 43

This commentary offers examples of indicators for evaluating feasibility, and of the limits of effect size estimation in pilot studies. As demonstrated, most pilot studies should not be used to estimate effect sizes, provide power calculations for statistical tests or perform exploratory analyses of efficacy. It is hoped that these guidelines will be useful to those planning pilot/feasibility studies before a larger-scale study
