Enhancing routine HIV and STI testing among young men who have sex with men
This study is registered on ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT03132415)
Fit‐Fat Index is better associated with heart rate variability compared to fitness and fatness alone as indicators of cardiometabolic human health
Our study suggests that compound FFIs are better predictors of HRV parameters than either cardiorespiratory fitness or fatness indicators alone. The FFI VAT was the best index in terms of its association to HRV
Measuring nutritional knowledge using Item Response Theory and its validity in European adolescents
Objective To analyse the Nutritional Knowledge Test (NKT) using Item Response Theory (ITR) analysis and to assess the construct validity of the Nutritional Knowledge Scale (NKTS) and its associations with adolescent food group consumption and nutritional biomarkers. Design Cross-sectional study. Setting Multicentre investigation conducted in ten European cities. Participants Adolescents aged 12·5–17·5 years ( n 3215) who completed over 75 % of th…
Association of breakfast consumption with objectively measured and self-reported physical activity, sedentary time and physical fitness in European adolescents
Objective To examine the association of breakfast consumption with objectively measured and self-reported physical activity, sedentary time and physical fitness. Design The HELENA (Healthy Lifestyle in Europe by Nutrition in Adolescence) Cross-Sectional Study. Breakfast consumption was assessed by two non-consecutive 24 h recalls and by a ‘Food Choices and Preferences’ questionnaire. Physical activity, sedentary time and physical fitness componen…
Nutrient intake of European adolescents
Objective An adequate nutritional intake in childhood and adolescence is crucial for growth and the prevention of youth and adult obesity and nutrition-related morbidities. Improving nutrient intake in children and adolescents is of public health importance. The purpose of the present study was to describe and evaluate the nutrient intake in a European sample using the D-A-CH nutrient intake recommendations and the Nutritional Quality Index (NQI)…
Relationship between cardiorespiratory fitness levels and dietary intake among European adolescents
on eventual increases in physical activity and a decrease in the number of hours spent watching TV or using a computer
Field-based fitness assessment in young people
The present study summarises the work developed by the ALPHA (Assessing Levels of Physical Activity) study and describes the procedures followed to select the tests included in the ALPHA health-related fitness test battery for children and adolescents. The authors reviewed physical fitness and health in youth findings from cross-sectional studies. The authors also performed three systematic reviews dealing with (1) the predictive validity of heal…
Recommended levels and intensities of physical activity to avoid low‐cardiorespiratory fitness in European adolescents
This study shows sex- and intensity-specific PA thresholds to discriminate between adolescents with a healthy CRF from those with a less favorable or unhealthy CRF level
Physical fitness in childhood and adolescence
High fitness is associated with a healthier programming of body composition at adolescence
The programming effect of birth weight on later body composition has become of increasing interest in recent years. This programming effect is affected by factors such as gender. Physical fitness could be another factor of influence. This study aimed to examine whether handgrip strength (HG) or cardiovascular fitness (CVF) modify the associations between birth weight and body composition in adolescents. A sample of 1,740 (942 females) adolescents…
