Molar morphology and the expression of C arabelli's trait in 45, X females
OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to observe the expression of Carabelli's trait in maxillary first (M1) and second (M2) permanent molars in relation to tooth crown size and cusp number and to consider the role of the shortage of sex chromosome material in these features during tooth crown development. METHODS: The data were derived from dental casts belonging to the KVANTTI Research Project on sex chromosome abnormalities headed by Profe…
Masculinization of the eruption pattern of permanent mandibular canines in opposite sex twin girls
The aim of this study is to explore the effect of prenatal androgenization on the clinical eruption of permanent teeth expressing dimorphism and bimaturism. The eruption curves of permanent teeth (except third molars), including those that make up the canine complex (permanent canines, lower first premolars), are compared among opposite sex twins (OS twins) relative to single‐born boys and girls. The comparisons are made with regard to three phas…
Torus mandibularis in 45,X females (Turner syndrome)
Ninety-three Finnish females with a 45,X chromosome constitution, 78 first-degree female, and 37 first-degree male relatives were examined to determine the frequency and expression of torus mandibularis. The results indicate that among adults the frequency of the trait was significantly lower and the expression weaker in the 45,X females than in male control relatives. A similar trend was observed in comparison to normal females. In juveniles the…

Occlusion in 47,XXY (Klinefelter syndrome) men
Occlusal morphology of permanent dentitions in 29 men with a 47,XXY chromosome complement (Klinefelter syndrome) was determined from dental casts. The results showed that a relatively frequent occlusal anomaly was mesial molar occlusion. Incisal open bite was also more common than in controls. Based on the present and previous observations of occlusal anomalies in various sex chromosome anomaly groups and normal controls, it is suggested that the…
Effect of sex chromosome aneuploidy on growth of human skin fibroblasts in cell culture
Growth of human skin fibroblast lines with sex chromosome aneuploidy was studied in cell culture. Two lines were derived from individuals with 45,X and two from individuals with 47,XYY chromosome constitution. The aneuploid cell lines were compared with normal skin fibroblasts derived from age-matched same-sex siblings. To ensure similar conditions in culture, each study-control pair was treated simultaneously and equally in all steps. Growth in …
Enamel thickness in 47, XYY males' permanent teeth
Enamel thickness of the maxillary permanent central incisors and canines in 14 47,XYY males, their male and female relatives and population-control males and females were determined from radiographs. The results indicated, although not fully unambiguously, that the thickness of enamel and that of 'dentin' (distance between mesial and distal dentino-enamel junctions) are increased in the teeth of 47,XYY males compared with normal controls. Earlier…
Effects of the Y chromosome on quantitative growth
The aim of the study was to investigate the effects of the Y chromosome on different body and head dimensions of 47,XYY males, and especially its effect on their body proportions. From seven adult 47,XYY males 25 anthropometric measurements were recorded and compared with four male relatives and 42 control males. In most dimensions 47,XYY males were larger than the normal males, the difference being mainly between 0.5 and 1.5 S.D. units. The body…
Body size and shape in 46,XY females with complete testicular feminization
Twenty-five anthropometric measurements were recorded from eight adult 46,XY females with complete testicular feminization and they were compared with those of female relatives of the patients and control females. In most dimensions 46,XY females were larger than normal females, the difference being close to one SD unit. The mean height of 46,XY females was 171.5 cm. The body proportions of 46,XY females were similar to those of normal females th…
The phenotype of 45,X females
Twenty-five anthropometric measurements were recorded from 48 adult 45,X females, 24 of their first-degree female relatives, and 95 control females. When 45,X females were compared with their female relatives and control females they were smaller in most dimensions, the largest differences being found in weight, stature, sitting height, arm length, leg length, bi-iliac diameter, bitrochanteric breadth and wrist width. No significant differences w…
Reduced tooth size in 45,X (Turner syndrome) females
Mean values and variances of deciduous and permanent tooth dimensions were compared between 121 45,X (Turner syndrome) females and 171 control subjects to clarify the role of the X chromosome on dental development. Although deciduous molars tended to be smaller than normal in 45,X females, there was no evidence of a reduction in tooth size for deciduous anterior teeth. In the permanent dentition, all mesiodistal dimensions were significantly smal…
The inheritance of shovel shape in maxillary central incisors
The aim of this study is to investigate the inheritance of the shovel shape of maxillary permanent central incisors. The material collected on Hailuoto Island, off the western coast of Finland, consists of 319 dental casts. The genealogical data are from the parish register. The genetic method is based on the incidence of the trait in the sibships as compared to that in the whole population sample. The results suggest that the trait is hereditary…
