  • A multi-stakeholder perspective on barriers to the adoption of personalized prevention in European healthcare systems

Open Access•Alexandra Costa, Maria Luís Cardoso et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2026

Introduction Personalized prevention is an important component of personalized medicine, tailoring interventions to the biological, behavioral, sociocultural and environmental characteristics of individuals for the prevention of disease onset, progression and recurrence. Despite its potential, personalized preventive interventions (PPI) remain less commonly implemented in clinical practice. This study explored the main barriers to a broader adopt…

  • The current stage of Italy in the implementation of genomics into the National Healthcare System

Open Access•Valentina Baccolini, Erica Pitini et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2025

Introduction: Genomics holds significant promise for prevention and clinical care yet integrating it into the national healthcare system (NHS) requires considerable system-wide changes. This study assessed the current stage of Italy in the use of genomics, to map critical areas for improvement and contribute to a strategic plan. Methods: A total of 18 experts rated individually the level of maturity of the Italian NHS on a scale from 1 (lowest) t…

  • Prevalence of Autism Spectrum Disorder in the Centro region of Portugal

Open Access•Célia Rasga, João Xavier Santos et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2023

The results indicate that the diagnosis of ASD is followed by the most effective educational policies in Centro Region. The variability in prevalence estimates across the different regions from the ASDEU project, and globally, is discussed

  • Mental Health of Healthcare Professionals

Open Access•Alexandra Costa, Teresa Caldas de Almeida et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2023

The COVID-19 pandemic increased psychosocial risk factors among healthcare professionals (HCPs). Objective: To characterize Portuguese HCPs mental health (MH), estimate anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and burnout symptoms, and identify risk/protective factors. A cross-sectional online survey and a longitudinal assessment were conducted in 2020 (T0) and 2021 (T1). Sociodemographic and occupational variables, COVID-19-rel…

  • Autistic Adult Services Availability, Preferences, and User Experiences

Open Access•Martina Micai, Francesca Fulceri et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2022

There is very little knowledge regarding autistic adult services, practices, and delivery. The study objective was to improve understanding of current services and practices for autistic adults and opportunities for improvement as part of the Autism Spectrum Disorder in the European Union (ASDEU) project. Separate survey versions were created for autistic adults, carers of autistic adults, and professionals in adult services. 2,009 persons respon…

  • Autistic Adult Health and Professional Perceptions of It

Open Access•Martina Micai, Antonio Ciaramella et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2021

The Autism Spectrum Disorders in the European Union (ASDEU) survey investigated the knowledge and health service experiences of users and providers to generate new hypotheses and scientific investigations that would contribute to improvement in health care for autistic adults. An online survey designed for autistic adults, carers of autistic adults, and professionals in adult services was translated into 11 languages and distributed electronicall…

  • Efficacy of focused social and communication intervention practices for young children with autism spectrum disorder

    Open Access•Álvaro Bejarano‐Martín, Ricardo Canal‐Bedia et al.•ARTICLE•Early Childhood Research Quarterly•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 3

  • Genetic signature of the São Miguel island population (Azores) assessed by 21 microsatellite loci

Open Access•Claudia C Branco, Paula Pacheco et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•2008

To study the genetic diversity of São Miguel's population we compared 21 microsatellite loci in 204 individuals from São Miguel island and 103 individuals from mainland Portugal. The results show that São Miguel and mainland Portugal populations have an average gene diversity of 0.767 and 0.765, respectively. Allele frequencies of all markers are comparable to other European populations. This observation is corroborated by the genetic relationshi…

  • Evaluation of linkage disequilibrium on the Xq13.3 region

Open Access•Claudia C Branco, Ester Cabrol et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•2008

The design of genetic studies of complex diseases is dependent on the extent and distribution of linkage disequilibrium (LD) across the genome in different populations. Here, we characterize the extent of LD in the Azores (Western, Central, and Eastern island groups) and mainland Portugal populations. LD was evaluated in the Xq13.3 region by genotyping eight STR markers spanning 20.9 Mb. Standardized multiallelic disequilibrium coefficient (D') a…
